Asus Eee PC 1201NL: Single-core ION netbook spotted

The 12.1-inch Asus Eee PC 1201N is widely recognized as one of the fastest netbooks on the market right now. Hardly surprising considering it includes a 1.6GHz dual-core Atom 330 processor and Nvidia ION chipset.
However, it looks like Asus is planning on releasing another model in the 1201 Seashell netbook range (we already have the 1201HA and 1201T too). The new Eee PC 1201NL was spotted at CES with a single-core 1.6GHz N270 Atom and Nvidia ION chipset. It will be sold with Windows 7 Starter rather than Windows 7 Home Premium, found on the 1201N.
Apart from that, both 1201N and 1201NL are identical. This includes a 12.1-inch (1366 x 768) display, chiclet keyboard, HDMI-out and glossy lids. It would be interesting to see if there was a tangible difference in battery lives between the 1201N/1201NL.
Given the lower spec CPU and Windows package, Asus expect the 1201NL to be $20-$30 cheaper than the 1201N if it hits retail. It’s still not entirely clear which markets Asus is planning to release this into, but we’ll keep you posted with any further developments.

The single core could have come with Win XP instead of W7SE .. This could have brought down the price by an additonal $30 – $50. Tsk tsk … MS is R.I.P’ing XP !!
Anybody with W7SE will upgrade to W7HP anyway at some point and end up spending more. Besides $20-$30 is hardly a difference between NL and N if it hits retail. Not good 🙁
