Intel and Nokia collaborating on new mobile Atom chip?

Intel and Nokia seem to be best of buddies at the moment. Not only have they stuck both their respective mobile Linux platforms into one melting pot to create Meego, rumours are surfacing of a hardware collaboration too. Apparently both companies are working together to create a new Atom-based SoC (system on chip) called Penwell for netbooks and mobile phones.
Any such partnership would make sense strategically. Intel is looking to crack the mobile/smartphone market that is heavily dominated by ARM and Nokia wants to grow its mobile market share in the US as well as developing its netbooks. Sounds like an exciting venture if true and would fit very well with their MeeGo mobile operating system.

Nokia-Intel collaboration news was out a good six months ago which seems to suggest that Nokia has been seriously re-working their biz strategy since at least a year. The recession has humbled many adamant manufacturers into coming out of their shell and really exploring synergisitic possibilities. Off late since launch of smartphone N900. Maemo OS is already impressive , so MeeGo OS may just hit the right buttons with users.
Nokia has also signed a 15-year agreement with Qualcomm [read: Quarrel-comm from Nokia’s point of view before they buried the hatchet very recently .. lol ] to churn Symbian-Snapdragon handsets.
The fallout kid of slow decision making & bad .. err .. horrible pricing policy by Nokia may just be their 3G Booklet but better late than never. This holds a lot of promise. I foresee a price war on the horizon between Nokia and its competitors in the netbook and smartphone space or simply put an out n out OS war cuz each manufacturer seeks to have their own brand of OS.
This just crossed my mind, don’t be surprised if R.I.M (Blackberry folks) decide to jump onto the netbook bandwagon ๐
