Intel AtomThere’s no doubting that Intel has a dual-core netbook Atom part on the horizon, especially given that Intel’s chief recently confirmed the rumours. Digitimes is reporting that Intel will launch the dual-core Atom N500 Atom series in June along with releasing details on Intel’s third Atom platform.

The Asus Eee PC 1215N will be one of the first dual-core Atom N500-powered netbooks when it launches early in the third quarter. It will also start to prepare the DDR3-enabled N455 and N475 Atom processors. These chips were seen running in the ASUS Eee PC 1018P, the company’s new flagship 10-inch netbook. No release dates for these netbooks have been announced so far.

Is nVidia Optimus compatible with this dual core as well – am thinking it will most probably be since the Asus model with N500 will sport Optimus – & DDR3 and what would be the impact on battery life ?

Battery life will be the biggest impact from the DDR2 to DDR3 move. Don’t see any reason why Optimus won’t be compatible with the new Atom processors.

So infact Asus 1215N is perhaps the ideal spec’d netbook – the one we’ve been waiting for – and this brings up another point – the era of $450 – $600 netbooks is here to stay. 10.1 inch screens will remain cheap and will still be sold well, albeit with limited scope, wheras 11 – 12″ screens will gain prominence to take advantage of the newer technology – we’ll all need to shell out that extra $$ and we all will am sure. AMD and VIA are still playing catch up !!

How will this dual atom perform in comparesin to an SU2300 or an SU7300 CPU? If it will be close, the Asus looks like a great device. Otherwise, I would rather see an Core2Duo/Optimus/Ion 2 combination in an 11.6″ display.
