NbC: Asus Eee PC 1005HA Seashell (N270) Review

Conclusion

The Eee PC 1005HA is ultimately lined up to replace the 1000HE that continues to sell well. To follow in its shoes, Asus has taken the unusual step of releasing two 1005HA models to cater for different price points. The cheaper N270 Atom-based version that we reviewed doesn’t match the 1000HE in terms of specs and battery life, but does come with a nicer lightweight design.

We enjoyed our time with the Asus Eee PC 1005HA (N270). It offers a contemporary design, crisp matte display, good build quality and decent battery life compared to the majority of netbooks out there. We also found the touchpad to be very responsive, despite our initial reservations.

However, on the negative side, we found the keyboard to be a bit of a backwards step compared to the chiclet keyboard used in the 1000HE. For light use, we sure it won’t be a problem, but remain unconvinced how it would fare under longer use. We also noticed that the 1005HA could get uncomfortably hot, leading to audible fan noise.

There is no doubt that the Eee PC 1005HA offers good value for money. You can pick one up for around the £270 mark in the UK, which is great value considering you get 5-6 hour battery life and Wi-Fi Draft-N in the package too. This is not something you usually find for under £300.

However, a quick search on the web reveals that you can pick up the older 1000HE for around £290, just £20 more than the 1005HA. Yes, it may be heavier and thicker, but it gives you a faster processor, Bluetooth and a better keyboard & battery life too. If you don’t mind the extra bulk, that’s where our money would still go.

I was told that better model doesnt maybe come sale at Finland at all. Anyway faster prosessor, bluetooth and lot better camera are big things. I dont understand why Asus had to release two models with one name and why only worse model comes for sale. I wonder if I order better model from Germany, it it possible get worse models scandinavian keyboard somewere can change it to better 1005 model. I would like 1008 and 1101 too, but 1008 you cant change battery and it doesnt have so good operating time and 1101 sounds very good, but everywere is said that its slow. Better 1005 would have been good option. Wonder if new Samsung N5xx comes sale at Finland/Scandinavia.

The power supply is very fragile…I had mine for one month and it works when it wants to. The other night the blue light on the charger would not go on. In the morning it worked…Same thing happened again tonight. Looks like I need to buy another power supply. Beware the tip is very small as well. Overall it is a good netbook. My second dislike is the left “mouse pad” click. You really need to apply about 3 times as much force as you should to get it to click. I would recommend trying it for yourself before buying. I use an external mouse because it is so hard to use. I have two laptops and do not have that problem with them. Good shopping.
