Asus Eee PC 1201N hits US pre-order

November 12, 2009 at 10:55 pm

Asus Eee PC 1201NSurely there must be some official news on the dual-core ION-powered Asus Eee PC 1201N soon. Just last week it appeared for pre-order in Italy and now it has hit pre-order in the US. Excaliber PC has the 12.1-inch netbook listed for $499 including free shipping. The model listed (1201N-PU17-BK) confirms what we’ve previously heard.

It has a dual-core 1.6GHz Atom 330 processor, ION graphics, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD & Windows 7 Home Premium. Other features include a 0.3MP webcam, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi (b/g/n), HDMI and a 6-cell battery.

This certainly looks like the netbook that many have longed for, the only thing that may work against it is battery life. Asus UK said an official announcement on the 1201N was expected this week, but we’ve not heard anything so far.

Thanks Bob!

I thought it was 3gb ram and 350 HD

I think to get it to a $499 price point (with freight included!) that one shouldn’t complain that it is less than 3GB / 350 GB HDD. This unit will be compared to others with Ion such as the HP mini 311, and once we get our hands on this and get the battery life tested it should put worries to rest – it is a 6 cell battery, after all, and I would think the 8 hour rating will give us a good 5 – 6 hours at least.
All the Ion tests on youtube have been with 1GB / XP systems, so let’s get one of these up and running to show others with 2 GB + Windows 7.
I also understand that Asus offers the 2 year warranty?

    Sign me up!

3 gb ram and 320 HD seems to be for the European market for a lot more money.

This netbook can’t come out soon enough.

I was worried with the initial 510 Euro pricepoint, but at under $500, I’m immediately sold. Just waiting for Newegg to have these in stock, and I’m snagging one.

I wanted to wait for a bit more processing power and the ION 2, which will have more shaders, but at the price it is being offered its hard to resist. I might be right with you shen New Egg gets them in stock.

How reliable is Excaliber PC? I haven’t ordered from them in the past.
The price sounds too good to be true. I think there is a typo in their description because there no HDMI is listed in their specs.

Huh? Didn’t Intel just come out with an announcement that the N330 was too hot to be used in netbooks? Did the Asus 1201N slip under the radar? Or did the decision by Intel come too late for Asus to withdraw?

Yeah, Intel did make that announcement. However, Intel is generally a bunch of boners (re: pairing Atom w/ 945 for $25, or selling it stand-alone for $45) which is complete BS.

Not to mention that 945 is trash itself.

Atom is an awesome little processor, but you’re crippling even it by pairing it with 945. Atom + Ion is the way to go–thank goodness Asus had some common sense for those of us who want to display flash, HD movies and do light gaming on our machines as well.

I am absolutely purchasing one of these as soon as they’re available.

YES Finally some word that it will be out before December. I can hardly wait for it to come out, and if it does before Black Friday I am sure to get a good deal on one.
Asus is still the best netbook maker in the world 😀
Heck COD 6 should run on this at low res 🙂
