Gateway EC1805U: CULV-powered 11.6-inch ultra-thin

The 11.6-inch Gateway EC1805U ultra-thin looks very similar in specs to the Acer Aspire 1410, this wouldn’t exactly be a surprise given that Gateway is a subsidiary of Acer. It comes with a 1.4GHz Intel Core2 Solo SU3500 processor, 2GB DDR2 RAM, a 250GB HDD and Windows Vista Home Premium.
Other features include a webcam, card reader, Dolby Sound, Wi-Fi, three USB ports, HDMI-out, a multi-gesture touchpad and 6-cell battery with 7 hours of reported battery life. The EC1805U is selling for $449 on Amazon.com

Samsung X120 review roundup – poor battery life

The 11.6-inch Samsung X120 CULV ultra-thin has now seen its first reviews. Despite a short 2.5-hour battery life, Cnet UK claimed it was their favourite 11.6” ultra-thin released so far. The liked its portability, nice screen and comfortable keyboard.
TrustedReviews also reviewed the Samsung X120 and found that it was let down by poor battery life, this is despite being well-designed and having good performance. The mouse buttons are placed on either side of the touchpad that is another minor annoyance. Read more
Acer unhappy with Intel CULV processor performance

It seems that Acer is not too happy with the performance of Intel’s CULV processors. The chips, mainly used in ultra-thin mini-notebooks ranging from 11.6-inches onwards, are not living up to the company’s expectations according to an earnings call last week.
Acer Chairman, JT Wang, said that whilst consumers are happy with the long battery life, the performance has been found wanting. To address this, Acer is expected to announce new ultra-thin devices in Q1 2010 that use new CULV (currently unannounced) processors. “This time we should be able to do it right,” Wang said.
Whilst it is vague in what Wang may have been referring to, it could be the new 32nm Westmere (Arrandale ) chips that combine a GPU and CPU into a single package. This design will keep consumption low and also provide a performance boost. The new chips are rumoured to have clock speeds similar to laptop CPUs but should benefit from hyper-threading.
Lenovo Ideapad U150 gets US launch details

Lenovo US has officially announced the 11.6-inch Ideapad U150 ultra-thin. This follows on from the recent Japanese launch and video unboxing. The Intel CULV-powered machine is set to launch in the United States in mid-November with prices starting at $585.
The US Ideapad U150 has an 11.6-inch (1366 x 768) display and is powered by an unspecified Intel Core 2 Duo processor. It comes with 2GB RAM (4GB max) and a 250GB or 320GB HDD (the largest SSD is 64GB). Other features include Wi-Fi (b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1, 1.3MP webcam, HDMI, two USB ports, 4-in-1 card reader and unusually a combo USB/eSATA port. The optional 6-cell battery should last for around 6 hours according to the company.

Acer Aspire 1420P / 1820PT / 1820PTZ convertible tablets get official

Acer’s marketing people should be fired. That’s the only conclusion I can come to after coming across what appear to be three identical 11.6-inch convertible netbooks/tablets from the company. Obviously, every company has the right to release different SKUs with slightly different hardware under the hood, but Acer doesn’t make it easy for the end consumer to know what those differences are.
The Acer Aspire 1420P, 1820PT and 1820PTZ convertible tablets have been made official by appearing on the official Acer US website. The only model we’ve previously heard of is the 1820PT that recently got a hands-on in Italy. The 1820PTZ seems to be identical but only sports an ‘Intel Dual Core’ processor as opposed to the ‘Intel Core 2 Duo’ seen on the 1820PT. Read more
Acer Aspire AS1410 gets video unboxing

The Windows 7 refresh of the Acer Aspire AS1410 was officially announced earlier this week and like most manufacturers it has been released on Windows 7 launch day. Peter from Netbooked ordered the AS1410 CULV ultra-thin and didn’t waste any time in letting us know his thoughts.
The Aspire AS1410 comes with an 11.6” (1366 x 768) display and a dual-core 1.2GHz processor. It’s reasonably light at 1.4kg and comes with 2GB RAM and a 250GB HDD. The keyboard was found to be similar to the Aspire 751, although looking at the video it seems to suffer from a fair bit of flex. Check it out for yourself after the jump. Read more
Lenovo’s 11.6-inch Ideapad U150 CULV sees Japan launch

The Lenovo Ideapad U150 CULV-based ultra-thin has gone official in Japan today. It has made an appearance on the company’s website finally giving away its full system specifications. The Ideapad U150 sports an 11.6-inch (1366 x 768) display and is powered by a 1.2GHz SU2300 processor.
It comes with 2GB RAM (8GB max) and a 250GB HDD. Other features include Wi-Fi (b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1, 1.3MP webcam, HDMI, two USB ports, card reader and unusually a combo USB/eSATA port.
As we’re finding with most ultra-thins, the U150 ultra-thin comes with Windows 7 Home Premium. It weighs 1.5Kg and at its thickest point measures 34.3mm. Pricing hasn’t been announced despite the U150 launching in Japan today. We would expect availability in other regions to be announced shortly.

Acer’s 11.6” multi-touch 1820PT convertible netbook gets real in Italy

The Acer Aspire Timeline 1820P was leaked a few weeks back but there has been no official confirmation of its existence. However, it looks like it is on its way as Notebook Italia managed to get some hands-on time with the Aspire 1820PT.
The concept is much the same, the 1820PT is a convertible tablet device with 11.6-inch (1366 x 768) multi-touch display and Windows 7 Home Premium. The specs do seemed to be beefed up, compared to the 1820P.
The Aspire 1820PT ultra-thin is powered by a 1.2GHZ dualSU7300 Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM (max 8GB), either 250GB or 320GB HDD. Other features include Wi-Fi (b/g), Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI, three USB ports & card reader.
The device includes a stylus to navigate the screen and the touchpad also supports multi-touch gestures (as well as the display). Acer quotes battery time to last for 8 hours. The 1820PT is not the lightest device on the market weighing in at 1.72kg. There’s no word on pricing right now, although I would expect the 1820PT to launch within the next few weeks.
Acer Aspire AS1410 11.6-inch CULV ultra-thin gets official

Acer has officially announced the Windows 7 refresh of the Acer Aspire AS1410. From what we can tell the AS1410 now uses a weaker processor but comes with Windows 7 Home Premium and a wallet-friendly $399
The 11.6-inch (1366 x 768) ultra-thin is powered by a 1.2GHz Intel SU2300 processor. It comes with 2GB RAM (max 4GB) and a 160GB HDD. Other features include a 6-cell (4400mAh) battery that should be good for six hours, HDMI-out, Wi-Fi (b/g/n) and three USB ports.
The AS1410 also includes a full-sized keyboard and multi-gesture touchpad. The only major omission seems to be Bluetooth support. The Aspire AS1410 is set for launch this “holiday season” in three colours (Diamond Black, Sapphire Blue and Ruby Red). Check out a full list of specs after the jump. Read more
Gateway intros EC14 CULV 11.6” Windows 7 ultra-thin

Gateway has announced a new ultra-thin device called the EC14. This is an 11.6-inch Intel CULV-powered mini-notebook debuting with Windows 7 Home Premium. It comes with up to 500GB HDD storage or 8GB RAM.
It is powered by a 1.3GHz dual-core SU4100 processor, Intel GS45 chipset and GMA 4500MHD graphics. Other features include HDMI, card reader, three USB ports and a 6-cell 5600mAh battery that should be good for 8 hours. The Gateway EC14 is available in Cherry Red or NightSky Black and will launch on October 22nd for $549.99.

Windows 7 CULV-based ultra-thins now up for pre-order

As we approach the launch of Windows 7 this Thursday (October 22nd) a number of notebook manufacturers are making the switch over to the new OS. We’ve been drip-feeding Windows 7 devices over the past few weeks and a number of these Intel CULV-powered ultra-thins are now appearing for pre-order on Amazon.com.
After the break we have listed all of these, typically 11.6-inch Windows 7 devices, which are now up for pre-order. Most are due to land on October 22nd; Windows 7 launch day. Acer officially announces 11.6” dual-core Aspire Timeline AS1810TZ

We first brought you details of the Acer Aspire Timeline AS1810TZ over two months ago. However, it’s taken all this time for Acer to officially announce the device for the US market. The 11.6-inch AS1810TZ features a 1.3GHz dual-core SU7300 processor and will launch with Windows 7 Home Premium on October 22nd from $549.99.
The company is quoting eight hours of battery life using its high capacity 6-cell battery.
Other features include a multi-gesture touchpad, Wi-Fi (Draft-N) and a webcam. The netbook weighs just 3.08lbs (1.4kg). At its thickest point, the AS1810TZ measures just over one-inch in thickness. HP Pavilion dm1 11.6” CULV gets official

The 11.6-inch Pavilion dm1 CULV-based ultra-thin has been officially announced by HP Japan. Most of the specs were revealed in a catalogue leak, but we still didn’t know what processor would be under the hood. The dm1 will sport a 1.2GHz dual core SU2300 processor, GS45 chipset and GMA 4500MHD graphics.
The Windows 7 Home Premium ultra-thin will have a 11.6-inch (1366 x 768) display, 250GB HDD, 2GB RAM (5GB max with two slots), 5-in-1 card reader and two USB ports. It will come with a 6-cell battery that should be good for 8 hours of battery life. The HP Pavilion dm1 will go on sold in the middle of November for around 70,000 Yen ($680).

Intel keen to push CULV-based ‘ultra-thins’ over netbooks

Intel has not hidden from the fact that it expects the CULV-based ultra-thin notebook segment to deliver higher margins over what it is currently delivered from netbooks. Intel’s CEO, Paul Otellini, reiterated this point at its recent Q2 conference call in which he talked about the differentiation between both product lines and why the company is bullish about the ‘ultra-thin’ segment’.
As the name suggests, ultra-thin devices are based on ultra-low voltage processors which means that a new class of portable can be created, well according to Intel anyway. “I think the usage models are really differentiating between notebooks and netbooks and that will be even more clear when the new ultra-thins are out there because now if you want a thin and light notebook, you don’t have to just pick a netbook. You can pick an affordable notebook that has more functionality,” said Otellini. Read more
