Lenovo Ideapad S12 gets official – full specs & price revealed

Following our earlier report, Lenovo has made the Ideapad S12 official. Our earlier article talked about netbook manufacturers moving to larger screens. Whilst it can be debateable whether a 12-inch device is a netbook or notebook, Lenovo picks no bones as to where it sees this device sitting. The press release refers to the S12 as the “company’s first 12-inch netbook”.
As we speculated this morning, the S12 will be available in three different chipset configurations. You will be able to buy it with the Atom (N270 + 945GSE) platform, ION platform or VIA Nano processor. The S12 will come with a 12.1-inch (1280 x 800) LED backlit display, 1GB RAM and a 160GB HDD. Other features include wireless draft-N, Bluetooth, three USB ports, 4-in-1 card reader. The Atom and VIA versions will come with an Expresscard slot whilst the ION version will come with a HDMI video out.
The pictures that we showed you this morning, present a svelte looking netbook. At its thickest point, the S12 measures only 28.9mm (1.14-inches). Battery life with the 3-cell battery should stand at 3 hours whilst with the 6-cell battery will give you 6 hours according to the company. The S12 will weigh 1.4kg with the 3-cell and 1.55kg with the 6-cell.
The Ideapad is set to launch in June with prices starting at $449. The ION platform option will cost a further $50 at $499 and will be available in August. It will be available in its ring pattern design in both black and white. The VIA SKU will only be available outside the US.
For the price, the Ideapad S12 sounds like a superb proposition. It comes with a 12-inch HD display, large enough to actually enjoy the content properly, as well as being powered by hardware capable of playing 1080p video and some light-weight games. Its form factor isn’t compromised either, having one of the smallest 12-inch frames around and just over 1-inch thick at its largest point. We eagerly await more information on the S12 going forward and hope it sets a benchmark that other manufacturers will follow.

Sounds great but it seems every time a manufacturer gets us excited about a new entry, they cheapen it some by eliminating features. I hope that’s not the case, but I read another review that said b/g wireless not type n. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
I really like the hdmi port and the thought that the Lenovo can actually keep up. I tried another netbook where 720P HD video was like a slide show because the pc couldn’t keep up. With Lenovo this should mean a high quality feed to HDTV, and with Nvidia I’m sure a wide choice of resolutions will be possible including 720P, 1080P and native 1366 by 768.
