Nokia Booklet 3G netbook gets US launch details

October 13, 2009 at 8:15 pm

Nokia Booklet 3GNokia has teamed up with AT&T to sell the Booklet 3G netbook for an upfront cost of $299 as long as you sign up for a two-year data contract costing $60 per month (5GB data). As with most other carriers offering netbooks on contracts, the lifetime cost is not cheap. The contract itself will cost $1,440 over those two years and that’s before adding the upfront cost of $299. However, AT&T has promised that other pricing options will also be available soon.

If you want to go it alone, then the Nokia Booklet 3G can be bought for the unsubsidised price of $599, exclusively (in retail) through Best Buy stores. Nokia once again emphasized a “true 12 hour” battery, but this is based on Mobile Mark ’07, which doesn’t use wireless activity in its tests. Therefore, I’d take that number with a pinch of salt. It will launch in the US with Windows 7 on October 22nd.

The Nokia Booklet 3G has a 10.1-inch (1280 x 720) display, measures just 20mm thick and is powered by a 1.6GHz Z530 Atom CPU. Other features include Bluetooth, HDMI-out and a 1.3MP webcam.

Fujitsu announces FMV LOOX C 11.6-inch ultra-thin

October 13, 2009 at 8:06 pm

Fujitsu FMV LOOX CAnother manufacturer has jumped onto the CULV-powered ultra-thin segment. Fujitsu has announced the 11.6-inch FMV LOOX C that is powered by either a dual-core 1.2GHz Intel SU2300 or 1.4GHz Intel SU9400 processor. This comes with the Intel GS45 chipset and GMA 4500MHD graphics.

As with all other netbooks/ultra-thins with 11.6-inch displays, the LOOX C will have a 1366 x 768 resolution screen. In terms of battery, the entry level FMV LOOX C/E50 battery should last 6.2 hours, whilst the FMV LOOX C/E70 is quoted at 9.2 hours.

Other features include 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi (Draft-N), card reader and three USB ports. No HDMI out I’m afraid. The C/E50 will launch in Japan on October 27th for 80,000 Yen (£561, $892, €601), with the C/E70 hitting retail two days later for 100,000 Yen (£702, $1115, €751). Certainly not cheap then, there’s no word on whether these models will be launching outside Japan for now.

Acer is launching an updated version of the Aspire One D250 that includes some hardware improvements. The D250 will have a 10.1-inch display with high-resolution (1280 x 720) display.

Dell Mini 9 mod converts netbook to slate tablet

October 12, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Dell Mini 9 ModWindows 7 is expected to herald a new dawn for touchscreen PC devices, mainly due to its in-built touch functionality (as long as you’re running Home Premium or higher). MyDellMini member Rob928 wanted to join in on the action and decided to mod his Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook to convert it into a touchscreen slate tablet.

This certainly looks like a complex mod involving removing the lid and trimming the hinges. A solder-less touchscreen kit was used for the finished result. Whilst the modder got the tablet to work with Windows 7, it is subject to heat build-up (40-50 degrees) as much of the heat is normally vented through the keyboard. Some pictures of his work in progress can be found here.

Asus intros Eee PC 1000HT value netbook in Japan

October 12, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Asus Eee PC 1000HTAsus has released a budget netbook in Japan that looks like trimmed down Asus Eee PC 1000HE. The Eee PC 1000HT appears to share similar styling to the 1000HE but isn’t as well specified.

The 1000HT comes with a 1.6GHz N270 Atom processor, 0.3MP webcam, Wi-Fi (b/g) and a lower capacity 6-cell battery. Other features are the same, including a 1024×600 10.1-inch matte display, 1GB RAM and a 160GB HDD.

I would be surprised if this value netbook appears in Europe, especially as Asus were meant to be cutting down on their product offering. The 1000HT goes on sale on 17th October for 37,800 Yen.

HP Mini 311 to get revised specs for Windows 7 release

October 11, 2009 at 8:48 pm

HP Mini 311Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system will be released in a matter of weeks now. Some manufacturers are planning to re-release existing netbooks with Windows 7 and as the hardware limits are different to that of XP, it looks like most will get revised specs too.

The ION LE-powered HP Mini 311 (or Compaq Mini 311c if you’re in Europe) is also to get a Windows 7 SKU and myHPMini managed to get hold of the revised spec list.

This includes full ION (rather than ION LE), different storage options (including 80GB SSD or 250GB/320GB HDD) and a maximum of 3GB RAM. It will also run on either Windows 7 Starter, Home Premium or Professional (32-bit) operating systems. It will be interesting to see how these options push up the price on release though.

Lenovo’s 11.6-inch Ideapad U150 manual unveiled

October 10, 2009 at 4:30 pm

Lenovo Ideapad U150 ManualThe CULV-based Lenovo Ideapad U150 made a quiet appearance at CEATEC 2009 earlier in the week. Despite the low-key unveiling, the 11.6-inch U150’s manual has already made an appearance online.

Strangely, the manual references two display sizes (11.6” or 11.1”) for the Ideapad U150. I’ve not heard of this before, maybe Lenovo are planning different displays for different regions? The U150 will also have 3/6-cell battery options and options for 3G, WiMAX and SSDs.

Apart from that, the specifications have also been fleshed out. The touchpad will support multi-touch gestures and interestingly there’ll also be an eSATA/USB combi port. Check out the specs and a hands-on video from Engadget after the jump. Read more

NbC: XS Micro Bluetooth USB Dongle Review

October 9, 2009 at 8:19 pm

XS Micro Bluetooth USB DongleBluetooth is one of those features that does not appear in every netbook. You will find it in mid-range to high-range netbooks, but it’s not often you’ll see Bluetooth in the lower-end netbooks. Bluetooth in netbooks is useful for a number of reasons, whether that be file transfer, music streaming or even cell phone tethering.

Using a USB Bluetooth dongle is one of the ways of getting Bluetooth onto your netbook and it’s a relatively inexpensive option. Gearzap, a specialist retailer of netbook and laptop accessories, kindly sent over the XS Micro Bluetooth USB dongle for review. This particular dongle is the smallest in the world according to its manufacturers and costs £8.95. GearZap applies a small delivery charge on top of this depending on whether shipping is to the UK or mainland Europe. Read more

Nokia Booklet 3G gets hands-on impressions [Video]

October 8, 2009 at 7:56 pm

ia Booklet 3GWe expect the Nokia Booklet 3G netbook to be available in a matter of weeks, if yesterday’s news (that it will hit O2 Germany on October 22nd) is anything to go by. There has not been too many previews of the device, but Laptop Mag managed to spend some quality time with the Booklet and have given their initial impressions.

The design wins points for a number of reasons. Firstly, the aluminum construction, all from one piece of metal, adds to the premium feel of the netbook. However, despite its slim profile (19.9mm thin) it felt heavier than it looks. The glossy lid is also a fingerprint magnet. Secondly, the flush glass display is very attractive. The 10-inch screen has a 720p resolution.

Less love was given to the chiclet keyboard, which felt a bit cramped despite a sturdy feel. The touchpad has low friction but has no gesture support. The mouse buttons are also easy to press. Another welcome addition is the hot-swappable sim-card slot. Check out a hands-on video after the break. Read more
