Sony Vaio X 11.1” ultra-portable reviewed

October 16, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Sony Vaio XFor those amongst you who can afford the astronomical £1,299 asking (base) price for the Sony Vaio X, then you’ll be interested to hear that T3 has published its review of the ultraportable. All of the marketing that I’ve seen from Sony UK has this device targeted to business users and it seems that they will value its tiny dimensions and featherweight chassis.

T3 felt it was an amazing bit of engineering married with a graceful design. It wasn’t all roses though as the thin frame is subject to flex and the keys on the keyboard have very little travel, along with the mouse buttons. The 2GHz Z550 Atom processor is good enough for most Office tasks. However, with an excellent 11.1-inch display and a premium carbon fibre shell you’d certainly have bragging rights by carrying this under your arm. Check out the key review points after the jump. Packard Bell unveils 11.6-inch Butterfly Touch convertible netbook

October 16, 2009 at 3:13 pm

Packard Bell Butterfly TouchPackard Bell has been showing off its new 11.6-inch touchscreen convertible netbook, dubbed the Butterfly Touch in Amsterdam. The guys over at PortableGear.nl were at the event and didn’t hesitate in taking lots of pictures of the new device.

The move is perhaps unsurprising given that Packard Bell, along with Gateway, are subsidiaries of Acer. Gateway recently launched a very similar looking device in the EC18T. Acer itself is meant to be releasing an almost identical device in the form of the Aspire Timeline 1820P.

The Butterfly Touch has a multi-touch display (much like the 1820P is meant to have). The full specifications of Packard Bell’s device hasn’t been released so far, but I’d be surprised if it wasn’t too dissimilar to the 1820P. The battery life is meant to be good for 8 hours. What we do know is that it will come with Windows 7 Home Premium and be released on October 22nd for €599. Check out a couple of hands-on videos after the break. Read more

Intel’s 1.86GHz N470 Atom CPU expected in March 2010

October 16, 2009 at 1:50 pm

Intel Atom N470Up until now, the 1.66GHz N450 Atom processor has been the only Pineview processor for netbooks that has been leaked. Many of you were disappointed that Intel didn’t up the clock speeds on the next-generation Atoms.

Well according to Fudzilla, a 1.86GHz N470 Atom is also on the pipeline and is expected to launch in March next year (the N450 is rumoured to launch in January). The N470 Atom will cost $75, placing it $11 more expensive than the N450 at $64. It will be interesting to see the take-up of both of these new chips given that the N270 is selling for just $44.

October 15, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Acer dual-boot Android netbook unboxedNews regarding Acer’s dual-booting Android/Windows 7 seems to be coming thick and fast right now. Pierre from Blogeee managed to get his hands on what looks like a finished retail unit, a week before its release.

He unboxes a white version that comes with a black interior (bezel & keyboard). The Android bootup sequence is shown and it is indeed fast. Browsing in Firefox within Android proved no problem too, working well. Pierre then shows the boot process into Windows 7, within Android. Check out the unboxing video (in French) after the break. Intel’s Atom N450 processor launches on January 3rd?

October 15, 2009 at 6:09 pm

Intel AtomThe next-generation Pineview processor used in netbooks, the Atom N450, will launch on 3rd January according to Fudzilla. It will also be the day that Intel will announce other new chipsets too. The 1.66Ghz N450 will sell for $64 at launch, around $20 more expensive than the popular 1.6Ghz N270 Atom.

The new Pineview processors are built around a two-chip platform. The Pineview processor features a CPU, GPU and memory controller on a single die. Combining this with Intel’s Tiger Pint I/O is what makes up the Pine Trail platform. The benefits of moving from 3 chips to 2 chips are power efficiency, lower costs that enable more fanless netbook designs.

The company has followed this up with a 10.2-inch netbook running the dual-core Atom 330 processor, normally found in nettops.

The company will be shipping the netbook from 1st December. The company encourages you to order directly from their site for $499, but we’d exhibit caution and wait for it to hit your favourite retailer (if it ever does!) Check out a spec list after the break. Read more

Intel AtomIntel has done well riding on the back of the netbook boom. It presented its third quarter financial results yesterday and revealed that so far this year it has sold $1 billion of Intel Atom chipsets. An astonishing number given that this the chip didn’t exist two years ago.

First shots of Google Chrome OS appear

October 14, 2009 at 8:28 pm

Google Chrome OS It seems that a few enthusiasts have stumbled onto some early code for Google’s Chrome OS, which gives us a first look at the operating system. Google had placed a “chromeos” folder in the Chromium build folder that users were able to install.

Interestingly, the results look very similar to how the Chrome browser looks right now. However, it’s only when you look closer that you can spot some important differences. For example, the upper left corner seems to present a new logo (different from the Chrome browser one) that opens a short links window. Read more

Asus Eee PC T101H debuting with N450 Atom in January?

October 14, 2009 at 8:21 pm

Asus Eee PC T101HThere has been little word regarding the 10.2-inch big brother to the 8.9-inch Asus Eee PC T91 convertible netbook. The Asus Eee PC T101H seems to have been in a state of limbo, whilst the company decides whether it worth green lighting the netbook or not. However, according to NetbookNews.de, it is on its way, expecting to make a formal appearance at CES in January 2010 and sporting a 1.66GHz N450 Atom Pineview processor.

The T101H is expected to come with a 10.2-inch resistive touchscreen display (mo multi-touch here) along with Windows 7. It will come with 1GB RAM, 16GB SSD, Wi-Fi (Draft-N), an accelerometer and a battery life good for 8 hours.

Options will include 3G and DVB-T digital TV. Pricing is expected to be between €650-€700. Not cheap considering that there is likely to be devices with multi-touch displays probably launching in the same time frame.

Mobinnova Beam: Tegra-powered smartbook to launch in January

October 14, 2009 at 8:16 pm

Mobinnova BeamThe Mobinnova élan smartbook, which debuted at Computex in June this year, has undergone a name change. The 8.9-inch Nvidia Tegra-based smartbook will now be known as the Mobinnova Beam according to Laptop Mag.

From what we can tell there are no new hardware revisions. The Mobinnova Beam is still expected to play 720p HD video content and have a long battery life (5-10 hours depending on activity). This is all wrapped up in a chassis weighing just 836g and measuring 20.5mm in thickness.

The device is expected to run the Windows CE operating system and be sold similarly to current subsidized netbooks on the market. The device was expected to ship by the end of this year, but that date has slipped. Launch pricing as well as the carrier is expected to be revealed in January 2010 at the CES trade show. One of the pricing plans is expected to be $60/month although there are no details on length of contract or any upfront fees. We’ll bring you more news as we have it.

Michael Dell: Netbooks only good for 36 hours

October 14, 2009 at 7:57 pm

Michael DellMichael Dell, founder & CEO of Dell Computers, has been damning in his opinion of the netbook experience. Talking in San Francisco at Churchill Club, he was trying to convince his audience that consumers prefer high-end PC devices rather than low-cost netbooks.

“If you take a user who’s used to a 14- or 15-inch notebook and you say ‘Here’s a 10-inch netbook,’ they’re gonna say ‘Hey, this is so fantastic. It’s so cute. It’s so light. I love it,” Dell said. “But about 36-hours later, they’re saying ‘The screen’s gonna have to go. Give me my 15-inch screen back.'” Read more
