NbC: MSI Wind U135 Review

Display
The MSI Wind U135 has a 10.1-inch (1024 x 600) LED backlit TFT display. Despite coming with a glossy display, we found the U135’s display to be one of the best we’ve used. It offers crisp text, vivid colours and a bright display. It also wasn’t as reflective as other glossy models on the market. In fact it seemed very similar to the one used in the Toshiba NB200 that we tested recently.

The picture below shows the Wind U135 in the outdoors. As you can see the display could still be read and in no way hindered its use. The U135 fared much better than other netbooks that we’ve used with glossy displays.

Colour saturation and contrast was very good also and meant that watching video content was a pleasure. It was nice to know that horizontal viewing angles was also very good, you could quite comfortably watch this with a friend on a plane without problems.

Speakers
Following the very quiet speakers of the Toshiba NB200, it was nice to see that the U135 could go very loud. The MSI Wind U135 has two speakers located either side on the bottom of the netbook. Sound quality was your typical netbook fare. There was no mid-range from what we could tell, which means playing music at high volumes can just end up giving you a headache.

Heat & Noise
This was an area where the Wind U135 really excelled. We didn’t notice the netbook getting too hot, even after significant use. Even the air blown out of the main side vent was never uncomfortably hot. This result is probably due to the new Pine Trail processor used to power the netbook.
As a result of this, noise levels were also kept to a minimum. Yes, if you were stressing the CPU quite hard (like when watching a YouTube video) then you could hear the fan whir, but under normal use it was very quiet.

I think it needs to be pointed out that the touchpad DOES in fact support multi-touch, scrolling, etc. You just need to grab the Sentelic Multi Touchpad driver from http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=nbdriver&maincat_no=135&prod_no=1973

Please include a close-up of the two MSI labels on the right underside. These labels show the wireless chipset used in the laptop. I would not touch the U135 if the chipset was Atheros ! too many problems with this chipset. Realtek is the best.

I am trying to find the user manual for my MSI wind U100. Not in the box and searched online to no avail. There are many things I do not know about my Netbook, so just do without!! I found a lot of manuals for the Asus Netbooks online, but shame on MSI/Proline for the lack of customer services.
My problem is — I do not know where to set the Webcam, it is not working, can anyone assist please. Thx E

Hi Guys,
I have bought the Wind U135 just today and the sales guy explained that the netbook doesnt have a built-in Bluetooth. You need to use a bluetooth plug-in/ device.
