MSI Wind U135 reviewed – battery life not up to competition

December 24, 2009 at 11:51 pm

MSI Wind U135The MSI Wind U135 netbook is just one of the company’s new netbooks running on the new Intel Pine Trail platform. The Wind U135 offers some extra features over the entry-level U130 including a chiclet keyboard and 20 percent larger touchpad. Laptop Mag has posted a full review of the unit and it seems to fare reasonably well given its $329 price point.

Positive points include a comfortable keyboard, bright display and great value for money. However, it does lose marks for having 5 hours less battery life than the Asus Eee PC 1005PE (the Wind U135 lasts for 5 hours and 35 minutes). The fan can also be quite noisy and the U135 suffers from long boot times. The Wind U135 is worth consideration, however they recommend that if you can plump for the extra $50, then the Eee PC 1005PE may be the better bet.

Averatec HS-105 netbook looks the part, lacks Pine Trail

December 23, 2009 at 8:30 pm

Averatec HS-105Averatec has announced the HS-105 netbook. The model looks well designed with an attractive slender chassis, chiclet keyboard and what looks like a 10.1-inch matte display.

Given all of the newly announced Pine Trail netbooks over the last few days you may expect the Averatec HS-105 to follow suit. Instead the netbook is powered by current Atom power in the form of a 1.6GHz N270 Atom processor and Intel 945GSE chipset.

It will support up to 2GB RAM and come with either a 160GB or 250GB HDD. Other features include Wi-Fi (b/g/n) and a 1.3MP webcam. There’s no word on pricing or availability for now. Check out some larger pictures after the break. Read more

Lenovo Ideapad S10-3 / S10-3t Pine Trail netbooks launching at CES

December 23, 2009 at 9:44 am

New Lenovo netbookLenovo is planning to announce its third-generation of netbooks at CES in January. The new Intel Pine Trail models include the Lenovo Ideapad S10-3 as well as a new convertible tablet model called the S10-3t (I imagine ‘t’ stands for touch here).

Both netbooks will have 10.1-inch displays and be powered by a 1.66GHz N450 Atom Pineview processor Windows 7. It will come with Wi-Fi as well as options for 3G and GPS. We have already seen the Ideapad S10-3 before when it passed through the FCC, although we’ve not yet laid eyes on the S10-3t convertible netbook. Both devices will come with full-sized keyboards according to the DigiTech report. I’m sure further details will be forthcoming very soon.

Asus Eee PC T101MT convertible tablet passes through FCC

December 22, 2009 at 6:04 pm

Asus Eee PC T101Asus’ 10-inch convertible netbook has been on the cards for a while now and it looks like they may finally be getting around to launch it. The Asus Eee PC T101MT convertible tablet has passed through the FCC, pointing to the fact that it will launch with a multi-touch display (much like the 8.9-inch Eee PC T91MT).

The FCC filings do not reveal too much information apart from the product label and a picture of the back. Click through for these pictures. Hopefully we’ll hear more at CES 2010 in January. Read more

MSI Wind U135 hands-on impression roundup

December 22, 2009 at 11:14 am

MSI Wind U135The MSI Wind U135 was officially announced yesterday armed with Intel’s N450 Atom Pineview processor. The 10-inch netbook has already seen some hands-on impressions from both Engadget and Laptop Mag. The Wind U135 comes with a chiclet keyboard, 20 percent larger touchpad over the U130 and a new stripy lid pattern.

Engadget found that performance was pretty much on par with the Asus Eee PC 1005PE that was widely reviewed yesterday. The chiclet matte keys felt sturdier than the 1005PE. The plastic chassis feels solid enough and it’s good to know that the 6-cell battery only protrudes slightly. Read more

MSI Wind U160 pictured, looks gorgeous

December 22, 2009 at 8:32 am

MSI Wind U160We broke the news on the existence of the MSI Wind U160 netbook yesterday and now Engadget has confirmed that it will be making an appearance at CES 2010. They’ve managed to get hold of a number of official press shots and we have to say that it looks like a stunning bit of design (it’s not too often we’ve said that about a MSI netbook!)

MSI appear to have taken some design cues from Asus and Toshiba, but the result is one of the company’s most desirable netbooks to date. The hinge is similar to that of the Toshiba NB200 whilst the touchpad consists of a dimpled surface as seen in Asus’ Seashell range. The 10-inch Wind U160 will be powered by a 1.66GHz N450 Pineview processor and come with a 10-hour battery. Prices will start around the $350 when on launch. Check out some more pictures after the break. Read more

Samsung NB30: Another 10.1” Pine Trail netbook

December 22, 2009 at 12:01 am

Samsung NB30In all my time writing for Netbook Choice I have never experienced the amount of new netbook announcements in one day as I’ve seen today. Hopefully, this is the last (for today at least!) What we have here is the Samsung NB30 netbook that was spotted at retailer Neobits.

From what I can tell this 1.66GHz N450 Pineview Atom netbook seems almost identical to the 10.1-inch Samsung N150 that we posted on earlier. The spec-list, dimensions and weight appear to be identical bar the 6.5 hour battery life (the N150 has a quoted 7 hour life). Either the specs are wrong for one of them or one of these models may be aesthetically different (much like the Samsung N310). There are no details on availability but I suspect we’ll see this appear in early January. Click through for the specs. Read more

December 21, 2009 at 11:39 pm

Asus Eee PC 1001PAsus UK has officially announced the Eee PC 1005P, 1005PE and 1001P netbooks. The first two we’ve already heard a lot about, but the 1001P has not been mentioned until now. I imagine it will be an entry level model although we don’t have too many hard details.

The Asus Eee PC 1001P will be powered by a 1.66GHz N450 Atom processor, 1GB RAM and a 160GB HDD. It will come with a 10.1-inch (1024 x 600) display and weigh 1.1kg. That’s all we know for now but hopefully we’ll get back to you soon with details on pricing and availability as well as a firmer spec-list.

Update: We’ve managed to gather some additional details on the Eee PC 1001P. It will come with Windows XP (not Windows 7), a 0.3MP webcam and a 4400mAh 6-cell battery good for 8.5 hours of battery life. The total weight including battery will be 1.27kg.

Broadcom Crystal HDBroadcom has announced the BCM70015 Crystal HD video processor for OEMs designing netbooks using the next-generation Intel Atom Pine Trail platform. The chip is designed for HD video playback on netbooks.

The single-chip HD video decoder can provide video playback of a number of different codecs including H.264/AVC, MPEG-2, VC-1, WMV9, MPEG-4, DivX, Xvid and AVS. It also provides support for Adobe Flash Player (v10.1) and Windows Media Player (v12).

Whilst a genuine alternative to Nvidia’s ION chipset, it is worth noting that Broadcom’s solution is only applicable for video and not games (unlike ION). The BCM70015 will be available in mini PCI-E format, as well as having the motherboard option.

Acer Aspire 1820PTZ tablet gets first video impressions

December 21, 2009 at 1:29 pm

Acer Aspire 1820PTZThe first impressions of the 11.6-inch Acer Aspire 1820PTZ convertible netbook are starting to roll in. VR-Zone forum user Denosha posted up a mini-review of the upcoming tablet and it seems like it will be worth the wait.

As you would expect, the 1820PTZ feels heavier than a normal netbook/ultra-thin of this size. The display has pressure sensitive finger & stylus support. When using it in pen mode, the display can enable palm rejection. The accelerometer worked well although it does take 1 – 3 seconds to rotate.

Denosha posted three videos of the 1820PTZ in action including a demonstration of its multi-touch capabilities with Microsoft Surface and an inking test in Microsoft Journal. He also posted a video showing the device booting up and how it transforms into a tablet. You can catch all three videos after the break. Read more
