HP Compaq 110c (Mini 110) netbook announced for UK market
May 27, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Following on from this morning’s HP announcement of new HP Mini netbooks for the US market, we now have details of the UK SKU. The HP Compaq Mini 110c (effectively the same as the US Mini 110) will launch in the UK in August with a suggested retail price starting at £279.
The features are very similar to the HP Mini 110 and, importantly, the 110c will also come with the optional video accelerator found in the Mini 110. The swirl-lid design that adorns the US Mini 110 and 1101 is not present here. Instead it has a high-gloss ‘infinity’ imprint finish. Read more

Video: Verizon’s HP Mini 1151NR netbook unboxed
May 19, 2009 at 3:13 pm
Verizon Wireless’ subsidised netbook, the HP Mini 1151NR, has been given the first video unboxing treatment from MobileBurn. As well as the unboxing ritual, they also connected to the Verizon 3G network to test what kind of bandwidth the netbook got. The results were pretty impressive, achieving an upstream speed of 1,661 KB/s and a downstream speed of 779 KB/s.
Engadget also went hands-on with the HP Mini and were quite fond of it by the end. Setting the netbook up was a breeze, and once up and running, connecting to the network took an average of 45 seconds. Performance was satisfactory with general everyday tasks being lag-free. Image intensive websites were a bit slower than expected however. The speeds that they achieved were much lower than MobileBurn. They average upstream speeds of 777kbps and downstream speeds of 455kbps. Battery life lasted for two hours and 15 minutes on a full battery charge.
The HP Mini 1151NR netbook is sold for $199 with a two year contract. Verizon Wireless service plans start at $39.99 for 250MB of data per month or $59.99 per month for 5GB a month of data usage. Check out the video after the break. Read more
Verizon Wireless confirms HP Mini 1000 launch for May 17th
May 14, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Verizon Wireless has finally confirmed that it will launch a subsidised HP Mini 1000 on May 17, following recent speculation. All of the rumours were spot on, with Verizon planning to sell the HP Mini 1151NR for $199 with a two year contract.
The specs of the HP Mini 1151NR are as previously thought. It has a 10.1-inch (1024 x 576) display and is powered by a 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU, 1GB RAM and 80GB hard drive. It comes with a 3-cell battery and weighs 1.1kg (2.45lbs). An optional 6-cell battery will also be available from Verizon, but retails for an additional $130.
Service plans start at $39.99 for 250MB of data per month or $59.99 per month for 5GB a month of data usage. The HP Mini 1151NR will be available in both stores and online from this Sunday.

Verizon’s HP Mini 1000 to cost $199 with two-year contract
May 12, 2009 at 12:44 pm
Verizon is set to launch its first foray into subsidised netbooks this week, with the launch of the HP Mini 1000 netbook on May 17. This much we already knew, but it now looks that Engadget has some firm indication on pricing, if some leaked screenshots are anything to go by.
For a two-year contract you are looking at an upfront cost of $199.99 (including a $50 rebate) whilst a one year contract will set you back $100 more at $299.99. The screenshots also confirms the launch date as Sunday May 17th. Many telecom operators seem to do very well out of subsidised netbooks, but personally I think it’s better value for money to use a USB or ExpressCard modem.
The specs of the HP Mini 1151NR are also confirmed but are no different to what we already listed. The model is a fairly standard in terms of specs. It has a 10.1-inch (1024 x 576) display and is powered by a 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU, 1GB RAM and 80GB hard drive. It comes with a 3-cell battery and weighs 1.1kg (2.45lbs). The 1151NR will be sold across all channels. You can find the screengrabs after the jump. Read more
Verizon to launch subsidised HP Mini 1000 on May 17th
May 10, 2009 at 10:11 am
Verizon Wireless is set to launch its first subsidised netbook, the HP Mini 1000 on May 17th according to BoyGeniusReport. We already knew that the specific model that Verizon will be selling is the HP Mini 1151NR.
Pricing hasn’t been confirmed right now, but according to the report a $199 with a 2-year contract is being hinted at. That doesn’t seem like a great deal to me as HP Mini netbooks start at around $350 without being locked into a pricey monthly fee.
HD vs. SD HP Mini 2140 netbook screens compared
April 18, 2009 at 10:06 am
Now that the high-resolution version of HP’s Mini 2140 netbook has started to filter into people’s hands, it was a matter of time before we started to see some pictures. The ‘HD’ screen option costs only $25 from HP and gives you a screen with resolution of 1366 x 768 compared to 1024 x 600 pixels. The obvious benefit is the increased screen real estate along with less need for scrolling.
Users from the HP Mini Forums have been posting their thoughts on the new screen. Whilst some find the text hard to read, the overall consensus seems to be that extra space is worth it. Given the way a lot of sites are developed, it is likely you will get ‘bars’ on the sides at this new resolution, but the need for less vertical scrolling will be a god-send for some. Digiffiti also has some impressions that are worth checking out. Click through for a large comparison shot between the two courtesy of rberga1. Read more
Netbook CPU shootout – AMD vs. Intel vs. VIA
April 14, 2009 at 1:20 pm
Whilst Intel’s Atom CPU is found in the majority of netbooks released to date, it is facing competition from other vendors who are looking to jump onto the netbook cash-cow. Apart from prospective ARM processors, AMD recently launched the Athlon Neo which is found in the 12-inch HP Pavilion dv2 and is meant to be a step-up from Intel Atom CPUs. VIA also launched the Nano chip, intended specifically for netbooks and has first been seen in the Samsung NC20.
Crave looked to try to compare these CPUs against each other, however it is not a precise comparison as they effectively benchmarked three different netbooks. Fighting Intel’s corner was an Asus Eee PC 1000HE complete with 1.66GHz N280 Atom CPU. VIA’s representative was the afore-mentioned Samsung NC20 with 1.3GHz Nano U2250 CPU. AMDs benchmarks were conducted by a HP Pavilion dv2, which came with an Athlon Neo 1.6GHz MV-40 processor.
Crave ran three different benchmarking tests and unsurprisingly there was no clear winner, with each CPU winning one test each. Intel’s Atom was the fastest in the multi-tasking test, the VIA Nano won the iTunes encoding test while the AMD won the Jalbum photo-program test. Since this is not an apples-for-apples comparison I would take the results with a pinch of salt. Each netbooks configuration would affect the outcome and they each have different clock speeds. Battery life of 13 netbooks compared, MSI U115 emerges victorious
April 10, 2009 at 6:48 pm
Netbook vendors and consumers are placing increasing importance on battery lives. We have seen a number of netbooks announced recently from all of the major players (MSI, Samsung, Asus and Acer) who are trying to push longer and longer lasting battery times. To take the headache out of finding out which ones last the longest, Netbook Review has undertaken the arduous task of comparing the battery life of thirteen different netbooks.
Each of the netbooks were tested with the UserBench Battery 2008 benchmark, which involves stress-testing the battery to an absolute maximum. The author claims that the results present a worse-case scenario and should be the bare minimum life expected. The app plays back a WMV video clip with the display and hard drive set to never switch off. Power management was set to “always on”. Read more

Official: High-res HP Mini 2140 Netbook now available
April 6, 2009 at 11:55 am
We can now confirm that there is an option on the HP site for the high resolution (1366 x 768) display for the HP Mini 2140. Two dates were bandied around for when we might expect the high resolution option for the HP Mini 2140. The original date of April 6 has turned out to be correct after a no-show on April Fools. As the rumour suggested the upgrade fee is only $25 which is great value and cheaper than the $35 that Dell is charging for upgrading its Dell Mini 10 to a similar resolution display.

The estimated ship date is 22 April so you may be waiting a few weeks, but for such little outlay, is definitely worth it. I have reservations about the text maybe being too small to read on a 10-inch display, but in saying that, I have been able to read the screen on a Vaio P without too many problems. We would love to know what people’s thoughts are when they start to receive these.

Nvidia Tegra-powered HP Mini 1000 netbook
April 2, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Nvidia has shown off a HP Mini 1000 at CTIA powered by its own Tegra platform. The unit was shown using a Windows CE build. As it uses an ARM CPU, it does not support Windows XP and Vista. The Nvidia Tegra line is a low-power platform aimed at mobile products and can handle 720p HD video.
Nvidia were showcasing the Tegra platform rather than telling the world that it is planning to commercialise a Tegra-powered HP Mini. The prototype demonstrated was about the size of a single DIMM RAM. It shows how scalable the platform is.
Could we see these in MIDs or netbooks soon? The advantage of HDMI, playable 3D graphics and more battery life may be enough to convince users to sacrifice Windows XP/Vista/Windows7. There are no firm Tegra product announcements yet, but as with Ion, it can’t be too long now.
