Lenovo Ideapad U150 unboxed [Video]
October 25, 2009 at 11:24 am
The 11.6-inch Lenovo Ideapad U150 ultra-thin was released in Japan last week and Peter over at Netbooked picked one up to review. Initial impressions appear to be positive, with superior build quality over the similarly-specced Acer Aspire AS1410. It comes with a 6-cell (4680mAh) battery that does bulk out of the bottom more than the AS1410. Accessibility is easy as the U150’s bottom panel reveals access to the hard drive, two RAM slots as well as a free PCI-E slot.
The Ideapad U150 sports an 11.6-inch (1366 x 768) display and is powered by a 1.2GHz SU2300 processor. It comes with 2GB RAM (8GB max) and a 250GB HDD. Other features include Wi-Fi (b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1, 1.3MP webcam, HDMI, two USB ports, card reader and unusually a combo USB/eSATA port. Check out the video unboxing after the break. Read more

As we’re finding with most ultra-thins, the U150 ultra-thin comes with Windows 7 Home Premium. It weighs 1.5Kg and at its thickest point measures 34.3mm. Pricing hasn’t been announced despite the U150 launching in Japan today. We would expect availability in other regions to be announced shortly.

Windows 7 netbooks now available for pre-order
October 19, 2009 at 1:03 pm
Following on from our previous post, where we highlighted the Intel CULV-powered ultra-thins that are now available to pre-order with Windows 7, we bring you a similarly long list of Windows 7 netbooks.
HP now has Windows 7 options on its site. The premium for Windows 7 is $50 for the Mini 311 (Home Premium) and $30 for the Mini 110 (Starter Edition). Dell also has Windows 7 options up on its site, it is charging $30 for the Starter Edition on its Mini 10/10v netbooks.
Amazon.com has been busy listing a number of new netbook SKUS with Windows 7. Most of these new models are running on Windows 7 Starter Edition and run 250GB hard drives, rather than the 160GB standard up until now. Memory modules are still stuck at 1GB though. Check out the list of Windows 7 netbooks available to pre-order below. Read more

Lenovo Ideapad S12 ION arriving 22nd October in Japan
October 19, 2009 at 9:20 am
Lenovo is finally set to launch its ION-powered Ideapad S12 netbook this week, well at least in Japan anyway. The 12.1-inch (1280 x 800) netbook was initially announced in late May in various forms (Intel, VIA and ION). The first two SKUS are already out whilst the ION version was delayed until the launch of Windows 7.
As promised, Lenovo Japan is set to launch the Ideapad S12 ION with Windows 7 Home Premium on October 22nd (Windows 7 launch day) for 68,800 Yen. Availability in other regions is expected shortly.
The Ideapad S12 ION partners a 1.6GHz N270 Atom CPU with the Nvidia 9400M GPU. The model includes 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi (b/g), 1.3MP webcam, three USB ports, 4-in-1 card reader, HDMI-out and a 6-cell battery good for 6 hours.

Lenovo’s 11.6-inch Ideapad U150 manual unveiled
October 10, 2009 at 4:30 pm
The CULV-based Lenovo Ideapad U150 made a quiet appearance at CEATEC 2009 earlier in the week. Despite the low-key unveiling, the 11.6-inch U150’s manual has already made an appearance online.
Strangely, the manual references two display sizes (11.6” or 11.1”) for the Ideapad U150. I’ve not heard of this before, maybe Lenovo are planning different displays for different regions? The U150 will also have 3/6-cell battery options and options for 3G, WiMAX and SSDs.
Apart from that, the specifications have also been fleshed out. The touchpad will support multi-touch gestures and interestingly there’ll also be an eSATA/USB combi port. Check out the specs and a hands-on video from Engadget after the jump. Read more
Lenovo Ideapad U150 showcased: 11.6-inch ultra-thin
October 6, 2009 at 8:10 pm
Lenovo has shown off the 11.6-inch Ideapad U150 at the CEATEC show in Japan. I’ve not come across this device before, it seems to be Lenovo’s entry into the 11.6” ultra-thin segment.
It is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB RAM and Intel GMA X4500 graphics. It certainly lives up to its ‘ultra-thin’ tag, measuring just 13.5mm in thickness and weighing 1.35kg. There are no details on where this device will be available and for how much, however we’ll keep you posted. Check out some more pictures after the break. Read more
Acer & Lenovo planning Tegra devices with Chrome OS?
September 1, 2009 at 5:27 pm
Google’s Chrome OS isn’t expected to hit netbooks until the second half of 2010, however Shanzai is reporting that it may be used in upcoming smartbooks. According to their sources, both Acer & Lenovo are working on Nvidia Tegra-based devices that will use Google’s new OS. They are also reporting that these devices could launch as early as next month.
It all sounded so plausible up until that last sentence. Given everything that Google has officially said about its Chrome OS regarding release dates, I’d be very surprised if they were at the stage of even launching Chrome OS as a beta product right now.
Lenovo’s Ideapad S12 ION to launch after Windows 7 release
August 20, 2009 at 11:30 pm
The Lenovo Ideapad S12 ION netbook was one of the first netbooks to be announced with Nvidia’s ION wizardry. However, since its announcement back in May, we’ve not heard too much about the ION version (the Atom and VIA SKUs are already out). Indeed, the Samsung N510 has stolen much of the ION momentum away from the S12 ION.
Gizmodo now has word that the S12 ION will not ship until Windows 7 has launched i.e. it will launch after October 22nd. This means it will be able to use the newer OS that should deliver better performance than the Vista version it was planning to ship with. No firm date was given, but it is expected to retail for $550, around $50 more expensive than the standard Atom SKU.
They were also told that a HP ION netbook is also due in the coming weeks. Looks like everyone wants to jump on the ION bandwagon.
Lenovo Ideapad S12 (Atom) reviewed
July 15, 2009 at 8:31 pm
The Lenovo Ideapad S12 is the company’s 12-inch entry into its Ideapad range of netbooks. Whilst much of the hype surrounds the ION-based S12, due later this year, the model also comes with versions powered with the Intel Atom and VIA Nano processor. Laptop Mag has the review of the Intel Atom version and overall seemed to like what they saw.
Putting it head-to-head against the current 12-inch netbook, the Samsung NC20, they found that the Samsung felt a bit sturdier and had a better design. However, they thought the Ideapad S12 benefits from its Quick Start instant-on operating system and had better audio. Regardless of the comparison, they found the S12 to have a very comfortable keyboard and a battery that was good for six hours. All of this combined, earned the Ideapad S12 an Editor’s Choice award. Check out the key review points after the jump. Read more
Lenovo Ideapad S12 hands-on video roundup
July 14, 2009 at 5:33 pm
A number of US sites recently went hands-on with the 12-inch Lenovo Ideapad S12 netbook. Before you ask, they were all sent the S12 powered by the Intel Atom platform, rather than the S12 ION that is due to launch later this year.
The specs of this machine included a 1.6GHz N270 Atom processor, 1GB RAM and a 160GB HDD. As you can probably guess, with these specs, performance was pretty much like any other netbook out there. It does come with a 6-cell battery though that’s good for up to six hours, although it does protrude from the back.
GottabeMobile has some pictures of how the Ideapad S12 compares against to its 10-inch little brother, the Ideapad S10-2. Whilst the S12 is (obviously) bigger, it benefits from a bigger keyboard and touchpad and a high-resolution (1280 x 800) display. JkOnTheRun also received the Ideapad S12 and S10-2 and have a video tour up on the site. Liliputing also received both netbooks and posted a video unboxing. You can check out both videos after the break. Read more
Broadcom’s Crystal HD Media Accelerator gets video demo
July 10, 2009 at 3:40 pm
There have been many questions surrounding the Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator, which gives you the ability to watch 1080p HD content on your lowly Atom-based netbook. The HP Mini 110 XP is one of the first netbooks that uses this Crystal HD solution and more are planned in the future.
Broadcom has given a video demonstration of this technology in action. Naren Sankar from Broadcom’s Consumer Electronics Group, placed two 10-inch netbooks side-by-side. One HP Mini 110 XP (with Crystal HD) and a Lenovo S10 to the right of it. He played a 1080p h.264 video file on both and noted the differences. Read more
Samsung & Lenovo lose preferential pricing for Intel Atom processors
July 6, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Since the first netbook was launched nearly two years ago, screen sizes have got progressively larger. The ‘typical’ netbook size has moved from 7-inches, to 9-inches and the current standard, 10-inches. However, a number of manufacturers haven’t stopped there and are looking at 11.6”/12.1” devices to launch under their netbook brands.
The likes of Microsoft and Intel are keen to draw a line under what a typical netbook should be, mainly to ensure discounts are only awarded to devices that meet strict guidelines. For example, Microsoft will only allow OEMs to use Windows 7 Starter Edition if the screen size is no bigger than 10.2-inches. Read more
