Kohjinsha DZ dual-screen netbook video review

December 14, 2009 at 8:21 am

Kohjinsha DZThe guys over at WOW-POW provided us with the first video unboxing of Kohjinsha’s DZ dual-screen netbook. They’ve followed this up with a three-part video review of this unique device. The Kohjinsha DZ netbook has two 10.1-inch (1024 x 600) displays which slide out so they can sit side-by-side.

In terms of the actual sliding mechanism, it appeared to work quite solidly with a sturdy hinge. When fully stretched, the display can wobble a bit due to the weight of the panels. Performance seems reasonable too with the 1.6GHz AMD Neo processor gaining a higher score than the 2GHz Z550 Atom. They are getting around 3 hours on the 6–cell battery.

You can check out all three videos after the break. The first video focuses on the dual-displays, the second video looks at the processor performance, whilst the last video looks at video & gaming performance as well as upgrading components. Read more

LG X30 XNote: 11.6-inch super-slim netbook outed

December 13, 2009 at 12:40 am

LG X30 XNoteLG is a company that has released some solid netbooks in the X110, X120 and X130 but hasn’t pushed them aggressively in key markets unlike other manufacturers. Hopefully that will change with the LG XNote X30 which recently passed through the FCC. What we can glean from the specs is that this skinny beauty will sport an 11.6-inch (1366 x 768) LED backlit display and weighs just 1.1kg (2.4lbs) including a 6-cell battery.

It will come with an unspecified Intel Atom processor paired with GMA 500 graphics. Other features include a chiclet keyboard, multi-touch gesture touchpad, Wi-Fi (draft-N), a SSD drive, card reader and two USB ports. It will also come with optional Bluetooth 2.1 and 1.3MP webcam. All of the ports are located at the back that keeps its sleek lines (the sides unusually have no ports whatsoever). There’s little other information, but hopefully we’ll hear something official on the LG X30 soon. Check out some pics after the cut. Read more

Toshiba NB300 netbook hits the FCC

December 12, 2009 at 7:55 pm

Toshiba NB300 schematicThe Toshiba NB300 has passed through the FCC highlighting that a new 10.1-inch netbook is on the way from the company. There is not too much information from the filings but we can tell is that the NB300 is of similar size to the NB200/NB205. It will also come with Qualcomm’s Gobi2000 chipset for 3G coverage.

Apart from that, there’s not too much information. It is likely that the Toshiba NB300 will come with Intel’s upcoming Pineview N450 Atom processor and launch in Q1 2010.

Kohjinsha’s DZ dual-screen netbook unboxed on video

December 11, 2009 at 11:06 am

Kohjinsha DZThe Kohjinsha DZ dual-screen netbook is very much a reality and in stores (well in Japan anyway). The guys over at WOW-POW were lucky enough to get hands-on with this unusual netbook and shot an unboxing video to give us an idea of what’s inside.

The DZ looks very intriguing it has an internal USB port that allows you to attach a USB 3G/WiMAX modem without it sticking out. It will also be easy to upgrade the 160GB HDD as it slides out easily once the single screw is removed. Kohjinsha promises a 4.5-hour battery life with its 5,200mAh battery, although I wonder if that’s a tad optimistic with two 10-inch displays going at full tilt. Check out the video after the break. Onkyo unveils its own dual-display netbook

December 10, 2009 at 2:09 pm

Onkyo DXOnkyo has unveiled a new DX series of netbooks that will incorporate twin displays, as first seen with the Kohjinsha DZ range. The Onkyo DX1007A5/ DX1007A5B netbooks go one better than the Kohjinsha DZ by including two 10.1-inch displays with high resolution (1366 x 768) panels. The Kohjinsha DZ has two 10.1-inch displays with 1024 x 600 resolution.

The Onkyo dual-screener also gets 2GB RAM and a 320GB HDD, comparing to the 1GB RAM and 160GB HDD found on the Kohjinsha. Apart from these internal differences the devices appear identical, they are probably using the same ODM.

It is powered by a 1.6GHz AMD Athlon Neo MV-40 processor, ATI Radeon HD 3200 GPU, 2GB RAM and 320GB HDD. Other features include Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi (b/g/n), a 1.3MP webcam, a 3.7-hour battery and Windows 7 Home Premium. It will be on sale at the end of this month in Japan for 84,000 Yen ($953, £585, €646).

JooJoo tablet hands-on video roundup

December 8, 2009 at 2:40 pm

JooJoo tabletThe JooJoo web tablet (formerly known as the CrunchPad) was christened its new name just yesterday, but with no accompanying media. However, it looks like Fusion Garage’s Chandra Rathakrishnan has been doing the rounds, as video hands-on impressions from both Cnet and Engadget have surfaced.

The JooJoo uses a number of multi-touch gestures including two finger swipes to move backwards/forwards. Cnet feels that the virtual keyboard is “poorly positioned”, although you can always use a Bluetooth/USB keyboard (kind of defeats the purpose though). Cnet were impressed with the 12.1-inch (1366 x 768) capacitive display, describing it as “pleasing to hold” and “gorgeous”. However, the $499 price point is likely to be a sticking point for many saying that it’s great “if you have money to burn.”

The hardware has a dedicated GPU powerful enough to run 1080p YouTube content. Engadget managed to experience this first-hand, describing the 1080p Avatar trailer as “crisp and lag-free.” Performance will be dependent on wireless bandwidth though. Engadget’s main gripe was that the “touch sensitivity is pretty bad” with the keyboard being “painful” to use. A pretty big problem for a tablet. Check out both hands-on videos below.

Update: Gizmodo and Wired have also posted their hands-on impressions. Read more

December 7, 2009 at 11:05 pm

Gateway EC1805UThe 11.6-inch Gateway EC1805U ultra-thin looks very similar in specs to the Acer Aspire 1410, this wouldn’t exactly be a surprise given that Gateway is a subsidiary of Acer. Other features include a webcam, card reader, Dolby Sound, Wi-Fi, three USB ports, HDMI-out, a multi-gesture touchpad and 6-cell battery with 7 hours of reported battery life. The EC1805U is selling for $449 on Amazon.com and starts shipping on December 9th.

CrunchPad tablet morphs into the $499 JooJoo

December 7, 2009 at 10:05 pm

JooJooFollowing on from the very public falling out between TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington and hardware partners Fusion Garage, the CrunchPad now has a new name. The 12.1-inch tablet will now be known as the JooJoo. Fusion Garage’s founder, Chandra Rathakrishnan, also went on the record to say that the device was already being worked on before Arrington approached them. He also claims that there was no contract between them.

The specs are mostly what we already know, it has a 12.1” capacitive touchscreen display and includes a 4GB SSD. It boots straight into the browser and runs a UNIX-based operating system. It includes Wi-Fi but no sim-slot for 3G. Battery life is quoted to last for around 5 hours. Pre-orders start from December 11th and will cost $499. Initial deliveries will begin in 8-10 weeks. Demos of the JooJoo are expected later this week.

First Pixel Qi displays target multi-touch tablets; DIY kits promised

December 7, 2009 at 2:23 pm

Pixel QiThe production of Pixel Qi’s 3Qi Hybrid Display is starting shortly and will ramp up over the first quarter of 2010. The company also confirmed that the first displays will hit “specialized tablet devices with multi-touch.”

The driving force behind the project, Mary Lou Jepsen, did not give any hints as to which manufacturers she is working with but expects further announcements at CES 2010 in early January. Interestingly, for those budding modders out there, Pixel Qi also confirmed that it plans to make its displays available through a DIY kit.

The 3-in-1 display can not only switch between an efficient black-and-white mode and a high resolution colour screen, but also to an e-paper mode suitable for reading in direct sunlight.

PsiXpda Pocket PC unveiled with 5-inch touchscreen & 3G

December 5, 2009 at 12:16 pm

PsiXpda New startup PsiXpda has launched a new pocket computer/UMPC device that harks back to the old PDAs of yesteryear. However, this is a refresh bought up to date with today’s technologies and comes with a feature-rich spec sheet.

It comes with a 5-inch (800 x 480) touchscreen display and powered by a 1.1GHz Z510 Intel Atom processor. You’ll also get 1GB RAM, a high-speed 16GB SSD and Windows XP. This is a miniature netbook if ever there was one.

It comes with a wide array of connectivity options including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi (b/g) and even an unlocked 3G modem pre-installed. You’ll also find a 64-key backlit keyboard and the display’s bezel houses the mouse buttons. The PsiXpda also includes a full-sized USB and mini USB port for wide peripheral support as well as a webcam.

The user replaceable 1850mAh battery should last between two to four hours depending on usage. The only realy blemish is an included 2.5mm socket, rather than a more standard 3.5mm one. It is set to launch in the UK for around the £500 mark, not a bad price given that 3G is included. Click through for the full specifications. Read more

The CrunchPad is no more

November 30, 2009 at 7:08 pm

CrunchPadThe CrunchPad project from TechCrunch founder, Michael Arrington has been sensationally axed today following what Arrington describes as “greed, jealousy and miscommunication.” This is a sharp turnaround, following positive momentum and an imminent launch.

The 12-inch touchscreen internet tablet was being manufactured by Fusion Garage, According to Arrington’s side of the story, it seems that Fusion Garage was looking to cut ties and push ahead with the CrunchPad without full ownership of the intellectual property.

Obviously Arrington is not happy about this. “We will almost certainly be filing multiple lawsuits against Fusion Garage, and possibly Chandra [Founder of Fusion Garage] and his shareholders as individuals, shortly. The legal system will work it all out over time,” he said. Disappointing news indeed. Click through for one of the key excerpts from Arrington’s post. Read more

Stantum’s multi-touch resistive Slate PC demoed [Video]

November 28, 2009 at 5:30 pm

Stantum Slate PCStantum’s Slate PC may be just a concept device right now, but that hasn’t stopped the company showing off its multi-touch resistive panel. The Stantum Slate PC is basically a keyboard-less Dell Mini 10. Netbooked managed to get a demonstration of the technology behind the Slate. Initial impressions pointed to a sensitive and responsive panel.

It supports 10 points on the screen i.e. all ten fingers, which is demoed on the video. They even show how sensitive the screen is by using it with a paintbrush! A number of gestures and swipes are also supported. There’s no release date for this but hopefully we’ll see one of these panels in a tablet netbook soon. Check out the video after the break. Kohjinsha DZ: Dual-screen netbook a reality, launches in December

November 26, 2009 at 4:40 pm

Kohjinsha DZEarly last month, Kohjinsha demonstrated what was believed to be a concept netbook device carrying two displays. The idea is that 10.1-inch LCD screen sits behind the other and slides out when needed. Well it appears that Kohjinsha will be commercially launching this netbook, dubbed DZ, in December.

It will have two 10.1-inch (1024 x 600) displays that, when combined, will give a total resolution of 2048 x 600 pixels. It will be powered by a 1.6GHz AMD Neo MV-40 processor, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD and Windows 7 Home Premium. The dual screens will come at the cost of 1.84kg in weight. Battery life should last for 4 hours according to the company.

The Kohjinsha DZ netbook will launch in Japan on December 11th for 79,800 Yen (£560, $920, €615). It’s unlikely that we’ll be seeing this unique model hitting western shores. Check out a video of the concept in action after the break. Read more
