March 25, 2010 at 9:32 pm
The LG X140 netbook was recently spotted in the wild along with some preliminary specs, however it has now passed through the FCC revealing much beefier hardware. Other features include a 9-cell battery, Wi-Fi (b/g/n), Bluetooth and Windows 7 Starter. No availability or price details right now but it can’t be too long now before we start to hear something official. Read more
JooJoo tablet now shipping; first deliveries on March 29
March 25, 2010 at 5:40 pm
After a short delay, the JooJoo tablet with 12-inch capacitive display has finally started to ship. The people that have been pre-ordering the device since last December will get their shipments first with deliveries expected by March 29. I imagine that new orders will ship soon thereafter.
This is a day that I’m sure many didn’t expect to see, especially with all the legal wranglings with former partner TechCrunch. It’s good to see them getting out of the gate before the iPad behemoth devours all. Read more
LG X300 super thin ultraportable in video hands-on
March 24, 2010 at 5:11 pm
The LG X300 is one of the thinnest 11.6-inch ultraportable’s around. It measures just 17.5mm in thickness and weighs only 970g. Engadget has managed to get some hands-on time with the X300 and felt that it was more akin to holding an e-reader rather than a laptop.
Build quality seems solid, despite the plastic construction. The screen was bright although a bit too glossy. The keyboard has no flex, but there are concerns over the touchpad and the click mechanism, despite it being quite large overall.
It is expected to hit some regions by the end of the month (not including Europe or the US) although pricing still remains a mystery (we can guarantee it won’t be cheap though!) Check out the hands-on video after the cut. Read more
Microsoft confirms dual-screen Courier is on the horizon?
March 24, 2010 at 12:24 pm
The Microsoft Courier is rumoured to be a dual-screen device powered by the Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset. Supposed pictures of the Courier were leaked at the beginning of the month, although Microsoft has stayed quiet on its existence.
However, in the first sign from Microsoft that this thing even exists appeared on the Microsoft Careers JobsBlog page. A post on the site about innovation inadvertently mentioned “the upcoming Courier digital journal” when talking about other MS tech including Natal, Windows phone 7 and IE9. The reference as since been deleted, but you can catch a screencap of the evidence after the cut. Read more

Averatec N1200 reviewed – sexy netbook let down by endurance
March 20, 2010 at 9:46 am
The Averatec N1200 10.1-inch netbook has pretty standard specifications (N450 Atom, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD and Windows 7 Starter) but comes in an attractive chassis less than an inch thick weighing around 1kg (2.2lbs).
Laptop Mag has put the N1200 netbook through its paces and came back with mixed impressions. The design of the Averatec N1200 is one of the “best-looking netbooks yet” according to the reviewer, with its stylish aluminium lid. It also has a lightweight chassis and large touchpad that wins it brownie points. Read more
Archos 13 notebook packs dual-core Atom processor
March 18, 2010 at 7:46 am
We don’t normally cover devices greater than 12-inches here at NbC, but we’re making an exception for the Archos A13PS. It piqued our interest as it’s one of the very few notebooks of that size that will be powered by a dual-core D510 Atom processor.
Now I’m not entirely sure why Archos opted for the Atom solution here instead of looking at Intel ULV processors. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the company wanted good graphics and battery life and may be looking to include next-gen ION in the package. Other details are thin on the ground apart form the fact it will come with Windows 7 Home Premium and is likely to have a 13.3-inch display. Read more

Sony Vaio M netbook unboxed
March 15, 2010 at 11:51 am
Sony’s value-oriented Vaio M netbook has seen its first unboxing pics courtesy of Stuff. The Vaio M netbook isn’t as fully featured as the Vaio W series, ditching the high-resolution screen, chiclet keyboard and slimmer profile, for a lower £300 price point when it becomes available in April.
The Vaio M has a 1.66GHz N450 Atom processor, 1GB RAM, 250GB HDD and a 10.1-inch (1024 x 600) display. Build quality seems typically solid and the display is crisp and bright. You can find some more pictures here.

Entourage Edge review roundup
March 14, 2010 at 4:58 pm
The Entourage Edge is an interesting device that maybe points to a new form-factor we’ll start to see more of going forward. The $499 Edge combines two displays, one with a 9.7-inch e-ink screen and the other with a 10.1-inch (1024 x 600) colour LCD. It uses the Android operating system and comes with a SD card slot, SIM slot, two USB ports, Wi-Fi (b/g) and costs $499.
A number of sites have reviewed the Entourage Edge recently and the general consensus seems to be that it gets a lot of things right, but it is still let down by its awkward design, heavy chassis and sluggish processor. Check out snippets from some recent reviews after the cut. Read more

Chrome OS smartbooks to be more expensive than Windows netbooks?
March 12, 2010 at 1:56 pm
Google ‘s Chrome operating system is not expected to launch until the second half later this year. Many question marks over OS remain, however what we do know is that Chrome OS will be heavily cloud based and Google is likely to dictate hardware requirements for devices running it.
Whilst the requirements are under wraps for now, it is believed to include relatively high performance graphics, SSDs and accelerometers. This has led Bob O’Donnell, VP of clients and displays at International Data Corp, to say that Chrome OS smartbooks will be even more expensive than Microsoft Windows-based netbooks. “PC OEMs say the hardware requirements—still under NDA–will make the systems actually more expensive than a Windows device, yet they don’t have anywhere near the applications support,” O’Donnell said. JooJoo’s trip to the FCC reveals N270 Atom, Nvidia ION internals
March 11, 2010 at 8:34 pm
Specs for the JooJoo 12.1-inch tablet have been under tight wraps, until now that is. The JooJoo has passed through the FCC where it has been revealed that the tablet will be powered by a 1.6GHz N270 Atom processor and Nvidia ION chipset. It’s no wonder that those that have tested the video capabilities have talked of flawless playback.
Another interesting thing spotted is a SIM card slot that likely means 3G will be an option at some point down the road. The JooJoo will ship with a Linux user interface, however other pictures from the FCC show it running with Windows 7 that could point to future OS choice. The non-removable battery should last for 5 hours. The JooJoo is due to launch on 25 March. Check out some more pictures below. Read more
Toshiba launching own tablet line-up by Q1 2011
March 11, 2010 at 2:13 pm
The craze for tablet devices is expected to explode when the Apple iPad hits the market next month. Many companies appear to be sitting on the sidelines and waiting for the consumer reaction to the iPad before launching their own slate devices.
Toshiba is one of them and plans to introduce a family of tablet devices by early 2011 at the latest. “It has proved to be a mistake to underestimate these new categories. And besides, we need new category creation to grow our industry,” says Jeff Barney, head of Toshiba’s U.S. notebook business. Now we just need to see whether there is an appetite for these upcoming slates.
