Notion Ink Adam tablet specs revealed; sports new design [Video hands-on]
February 15, 2010 at 8:36 am
Hard details of Notion Ink’s 10.1-inch Adam tablet have been few and far between. That has now changed with the company unveiling the specifications over on it its official site. We can now confirm that there will indeed be two SKUs, one including the Pixel-Qi display and one without. It will also come with a HDMI out, a rotating 3.2MP webcam, a 10.1-inch (1024 x 600) capacitive multitouch display and a 3-cell battery that should be good for 16 hours in full colour mode.
The design has also changed since our last look of the device at CES 2010 earlier in the year. The guys over at Technoholik managed to spend some time with the Adam and we’ve included their hands-on video after the jump. Slashgear also has had a pre-MWC play around and shot a video demonstrating Adobe Flash and its rotating webcam. Pricing is still a mystery, but hopefully more details will emerge at MWC that officially starts today. Read more
Samsung intros LTE 4G netbook
February 15, 2010 at 7:54 am
Samsung has demoed the first Long Term Evolution (LTE) netbook at the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona. LTE is the next-generation mobile network that promises to deliver higher speeds and lower latency to users. It has used its Samsung N150 netbook to demonstrate LTE capabilities with the embedded Kalmia chipset.
The specs of the Samsung N150 remain the same apart from the inclusion of the LTE-enabling Kalmia chipset. Samsung says that rollout of LTE enabled netbooks will depend on demand. The initial deployment of LTE began in 2009, but trials have continued into 2010.

Modern Warfare 2 on the Samsung N510 netbook [Video]
February 14, 2010 at 4:59 pm
Netbooks aren’t meant for gaming, or so the saying goes. Nvidia has other ideas with its ION chipset that means you should be able to play even recent games as long as you don’t mind sacrificing settings and resolution. To give you an idea of how well an ION netbook can play games, we have a quick video demo of one of the current best-sellers, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 playing on the 11.6-inch Samsung N510.
It is being played at a resolution of 800 x 600 with the lowest settings. We managed to score between 20 to 30fps on average with the occasional drop below that. I’ve tried it quite a few times and it is actually reasonably playable. Obviously it’s not as smooth as my quad-core PC, but for those times when my desktop isn’t around, it gives you a quick gaming fix. Check out the video of my demo playing the game (badly) below as well as a couple of extra videos looking at HD YouTube Flash and 1080p video content. We have also updated our Samsung N510 review with these videos. Read more
Alienware M11x gaming ultraportable gets video tour
February 13, 2010 at 11:28 pm
The Alienware M11x is probably the most powerful 11.6-inch device on the market. Whilst we saw the first review pop up last week, we hadn’t seen any close ups of the M11x. Johannes from NewGadgets.de managed to get some hands-on time with the gaming beast and shot a quick video tour that shows the ports, switchable graphics (not Optimus) and backlit keyboard. It’s well worth the watch if you’re considering the M11x as a future purchase. Check it out after the break. Read more
Lenovo Ideapad S10-3t convertible netbook unboxed [Video]
February 13, 2010 at 7:06 pm
The Lenovo Ideapad S10-3t is the company’s flagship convertible netbook. It is armed with a 10-1-inch multitouch capacitive display, either a N450 or N470 Atom processor, up to 2GB RAM and a 320GB HDD. Whilst we’ve heard little information since its release, the guys over at NetbookNews.de have shared some unboxing pics that gives us a closer look at the device.
The first thing you notice is the very large battery protruding from the back. It’s not attractive but if it manages to deliver decent endurance then I’m sure people will put up with it. The touchpad also includes integrated mouse buttons, something I’m not too fond of, but I imagine this was done to keep the size manageable. Check out a few pictures for yourself after the break.
Update: We have also attached a video unboxing from NetbookNews after the jump. Read more

Samsung intends to launch a netbook (or smartbook) using the new Chrome operating system. Phil Newton, head of Samsung IT Australia, said that the Chrome OS netbook will sport a 10.1-inch display and be similar in form-factor to the new Pine Trail Samsung N210 netbook.

Lenovo forced to abandon ‘smartbook’ term in Germany
February 12, 2010 at 2:32 pm
The ‘smartbook’ name dispute continues with the news that a Germany court has ordered Lenovo to stop using the ‘smartbook’ term to describe devices such as the Lenovo Skylight in Germany. Smartbook AG claims that it owns the trademark and says that Lenovo could be liable to a €250,000 penalty every time the term is used.
“Without approval by Smartbook AG, Lenovo must refrain from using the character sequence ‘Smartbook’ in all writing systems in association with mobile computers — such as laptops (notebooks) — as part of commercial correspondence in the Federal Republic of Germany,” Smartbook AG said in a statement. Nokia Booklet 3G now shipping in UK
February 12, 2010 at 1:04 pm
We thought we’d flag that the Nokia Booklet 3G netbook is now shipping through the Nokia store. We’ve already had a dig about the extortionate UK pricing (£649.00), which could buy you two netbooks from other manufacturers, but for those willing to part with their cash there’s no doubt you’ll be getting one of the prettiest netbooks on the market.
It has a 10.1-inch (1280 x 768) frameless display, encased in an aluminum chassis just 20mm in thickness. The Booklet 3G also boasts a 12 hour battery life, HDMI-out and embedded 3G. It is powered by the 1.6GHz Z530 Atom processor and comes with 1GB RAM (max), 120GB HDD and Windows 7 Starter. Read more
HP Compaq Airlife 100 smartbook unveiled
February 12, 2010 at 12:40 pm
HP Spain has announced the Compaq Airlife 100 smartbook. It comes with a 10.1-inch display and integrated 3G pointing to the ARM chipset (possibly a Qualcomm Snapdragon?) Other features include a 16GB SSD, Wi-Fi, card reader, webcam and a 12-hour battery life.
The Airlife 100 looks like a very attractive slim line device, sporting a flat-key keyboard and some additional shortkey buttons sitting besides the touchpad. I didn’t notice the mouse buttons, which could point to an integrated solution. It’s also difficult to tell whether it comes with a matte or glossy display and at what resolution. Read more

February 11, 2010 at 5:37 pm
The 10-inch Asus Eee PC T101MT convertible netbook may getting ever closer to its release. We recently saw a video overview of the user interface direct from Asus itself and now Amazon Germany has the device up for pre-order.
Some of the specs are incorrect (i.e. 12.1-inch display) and there’s no release date, but the listing points to the fact that it can’t be too far away. Samsung N220 tested – good all rounder
February 11, 2010 at 9:40 am
The 10-inch Samsung N220 is the company’s premium Pine Trail netbook mainly as a result of its 11-hour quoted battery life. The base specs aren’t too different from most other Pine Trail netbooks and includes a 1.66GHz N450 Atom processor, 1GB RAM, 250GB HDD and Windows 7 Starter. However, the N220 does come with a chiclet keyboard and two-tone colour design.
Riccardo from NetbookNews.it has posted his review of the Samsung N220. He was impressed with the 10-inch matte display and felt the keyboard was comfortable (good to hear after the apparent disappointment of the Samsung N150’s keyboard). Battery life was also good for 6-7 hours of real life usage and build quality was above average. At 100 percent CPU load and display brightness, the 6-cell 4400mAh battery lasted for 5 hours and 27 minutes. Read more
