Asus no longer including DVD recovery discs with netbooks
March 14, 2010 at 4:08 pm
One staple of all Asus Eee PC netbooks sold to date is the recovery DVD disc. As longer as you have a USB optical drive, you can use the disc to restore the netbook to factory settings.
Asus will now be ditching recovery discs packaged with netbooks given concerns over the environment, or so the company says. Instead, the company recommend you just press the F9 key to restore the netbook to default settings. Just don’t go wiping over the hard drive, otherwise then you’ll have no other options!

March 2, 2010 at 2:38 pm
The last time we saw some benchmark numbers for Nvidia’s next-gen ION, it seemed to suggest that the performance wasn’t up to the original. Following the official new ION announcement this morning, we now know that two ION versions are hitting netbooks. An 8-core version for 10-inch netbooks and 16-core version for 12-inch ones.
It is safe to say that the Asus Eee PC 1201PN will sport 16-core ION and Notebook Italia has managed to conduct a benchmark to give us an idea as to where performance sits. Using the 3DMark06 benchmark, they managed to record a score of 2,013. This compares to a score of around 1,580 3DMarks for the Asus Eee PC 1201N. Read more

The 10-inch Asus PC T101MT convertible netbook is not even officially released yet, but the folks at NetbookLive have already got hold of one and documented their initial impressions as well as treating us to some unboxing pics. The version they are playing with comes with a 1.66GHz N450 Atom processor, 2GB RAM and a 320GB HDD. First thoughts on the resistive multitouch display is that the response is slightly poor, however further testing is needed. A full review is expected in the next few days.
AllTouchTablet also has some initial impressions on the Eee PC T101MT. Build quality seems strong and the chiclet keyboard has little flex. They also talked of a lack of precision on the touchscreen, mainly at the edges. Performance was also found to be sluggish. Check out a couple of hands on videos from them after the jump. Read more

Asus Eee PC 1001P reviewed – a fine budget netbook
February 19, 2010 at 2:26 pm
The Asus Eee PC 1001P is the company’s budget-targeted Pine Trail netbook. This $299 model follows in the Seashell design of previous Eee PC netbooks and looks similar to the Eee PC 1005PE-P. The 10.1-inch (1024 x 600) netbook is powered by a 1.66GHz N450 Pineview processor, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD and comes with Windows 7 Starter.
Laptop Mag put the 1001P through its paces and liked what they saw. Some of the highlights include a textured matte lid that avoids any fingerprint mess, a comfortable keyboard, long battery life (over 8 hours) and a bargain price. The find little not to like at this price point but picked on its single touchpad mouse button and smaller hard drive (although 160GB was the norm before Pine Trail came along!) You can check out the full review here.

Asus to reveal “killer product” in June
February 10, 2010 at 6:21 pm
Asus Chairman Jonney Shih has said that the company is prepping a “killer product” for launch in June, probably during the Computex show in Taiwan. Whilst he didn’t give any further hints, the most likely reference is to its tablet device (dubbed Eee Pad) that is will sport the Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset.
The Eee Pad was first spotted at CES 2010, although no specs were detailed. It was simply referred to as the “Asus Tablet Concept” along with a placeholder saying that it is powered by a Nvidia Tegra chip. The news came as Asus announced it will be spinning off its Pegatron manufacturing arm. The device is said to be manufactured by Pegatron and be launched at a sub-$500 price point. If true, Apple iPad may have some stiff competition in the second half of this year.

Asus Eee PC T101MT interface gets video walkthrough
February 9, 2010 at 1:43 pm
The 10-inch Asus Eee PC T101MT is a mysterious machine, it first made an appearance at CES in 2009 but it still hasn’t been released. Recently, it passed through the FCC and even made an appearance once again at CES 2010 but we’re still no closer to getting any official launch details.
It may not to be too long to wait, however, as Asus has released a video tutorial of the user interface. It shows off some of the software applications including touching up photos, creating photo albums and leaving handwritten desktop memos. I didn’t notice any real differences to that used in the 8.9-inch T91MT. Whilst we continue to wait for the T101MT to show up you can check out the video after the jump. Read more
