Asus Eee PC 1101HA netbook review roundup

August 7, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Asus Eee PC 1101HAA number of reviews for Asus’ 11.6-inch Eee PC 1101HA have appeared over the last few days. The 1101HA can be thought of a larger version of the Eee PC 1005HA that we reviewed recently. It shares a very similar design and has a removable 6-cell battery and no port flaps, unlike the thinner 1008HA Seashell.

One of the main differences, apart from that high-resolution 11.6-inch (1366 x 768) display is that it uses a 1.33GHz Z520 Atom processor (the 1005HA uses a 1.6GHz N270 Atom). To compensate for the lack of relative power, however, Asus allows you to overclock the processor by up to 30 percent. Read more

Asus gets knuckles wrapped in Taiwan over misleading Eee PC ad

August 6, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Asus gets knuckles wrapped in Taiwan over misleading Eee PC adAsustek has been sanctioned by the Taiwanese Fair Trade Commission for a misleading Eee PC advertisement. Asus placed an advert highlighting that consumers could receive a TV receiver worth NT$2,900 (£53), by paying just NT$999 (£18) for it when buying an Eee PC netbook.

However, as Asus could not show that the TV receiver was actually being sold for that amount, the FTC deemed the advert to be misleading. When the receiver actually hit the market, it was indeed priced lower than shown by Asus. The company countered the claim by saying that the price quoted was the expected price when the ad was being put together.

Asustek has been ordered to withdraw the advertisements immediately and fined NT$80,000 (£1,453, $2,445, €1,703) for their trouble. It also promised to be more careful with its future marketing efforts.

NbC: Asus Eee PC 1005HA Seashell (N270) Review

August 6, 2009 at 9:18 am

Asus Eee PC 1005HA Seashell THUMBNAILThe Asus Eee PC 1005HA Seashell can be thought of as the spiritual successor to the company’s best-selling Eee PC 1000HE. It is thinner, lighter and sports a nicer design, whilst not compromising on the specifications and battery life. The 1005HA is a worthy update to the 1000HE and in our view, the biggest hurdle Asus’ marketing team will face is communicating the significant differences between the N270 and N280 Atom versions of the Eee PC 10005HA.

We reviewed the N270 Atom model and found it to be a very competent netbook, offering good build quality, a comfortable keyboard and a crisp matte display. However, battery life wasn’t stellar when compared to the standard set by the most recent models and the 1005HA also had heat issues. At its price point though, it offers great value for money compared to its peers. Read on for our thorough review, including some comprehensive performance and battery tests. Read more

Asus Eee PC T91 video unboxing

August 3, 2009 at 7:55 pm

Asus Eee PC T91Asus has promised us that its 8.9-inch convertible netbook, the Eee PC T91 should begin shipping this week in the UK. However, whilst you’re waiting, we thought you may want to feast your eyes on what you’ll find in the box. JKKMobile has posted a video unboxing and shows just how small (and glossy) the device really is. He also contorts it into all kinds of positions to show you how strong that hinge really is.

The Asus Eee PC T91 has a 1024 x 600 resolution 8.9-inch display powered by a 1.33GHz Z520 Atom processor. Whilst this version comes with a resistive display, a future SKU is believed to have a multi-touch display and will most likely coincide with the launch of Windows 7. In the meantime, check out JKKMobile’s first impressions and unboxing after the jump. Read more

Asus UK delays Eee PC T91 launch to late August; pre-order prices drop

July 31, 2009 at 11:43 am

Asus Eee PC T91Update: Good news. We have just received direct word from Asus that the Eee PC T91’s have now arrived in distribution and will hit the UK etailers mentioned below next week. Thankfully no wait until the end of August then!

The Asus Eee PC T91 convertible netbook has suffered a number of delays in the UK. It was originally scheduled to be released in late May/early June, it then got put back to “early July” and then “late July”. We now have word from Asus, that the Eee PC T91 will “be available by end of August”.

At the recent Asus press conference, we were assured by company reps that it would definitely hit that “late July” deadline, but it looks like its hit a snag somewhere, prompting another delay. At the time, the delays were explained by trying to get the software just right.

Whilst this is disappointing news, you may be happy to know that the pre-order price of the 8.9-inch Eee PC has dropped to £409.00 from Amazon. It was priced at £449.00 just earlier this month. Laptops Direct also has the T91 on pre-order, for £429.97. Ebuyer is also set to get in on the pre-order action soon.

Windows 7 vs. XP – which gives the better netbook performance?

July 29, 2009 at 6:31 pm

Windows 7 on Eee PC 1005HAThe release of Windows 7 is set to be a milestone for netbooks. Most netbooks run Windows XP, an operating system that is starting to show its age. Against the heavy hardware requirements of Vista, Windows 7 is set to be the next major Windows OS fully embraced by netbook devices. It’s relatively light system requirements and native multi-touch gesture support will ensure its presence on many netbooks from the fourth quarter this year.

However, some of you may be wondering, how much of an overhead Windows 7 uses compared to Windows XP. This is where a good benchmark roundup from Legit Reviews comes into play. They compared the performance of both operating systems and used the same benchmarks across both OSes on an Asus Eee PC 1005HA to determine which gave the better netbook performance. Read more

Asus launches Eee PC Seashell netbook series into India

July 29, 2009 at 6:05 pm

Asus launches Eee PC Seashell netbook series into IndiaAsus is looking to make the Eee PC a premium brand in India, by officially launching its Seashell netbook series into the market. This includes the super-slim Eee PC 1008HA, the more mainstream Eee PC 1005HA and 11.6-inch Eee PC 1101HA. Official pricing has not been announced and neither has what colour options will be available. Judging by the press release it seems that only the higher-spec N280 1005HA will be making it to the country.

Mr. Stanley Wu, Country Head for Notebook and Eee PC Business, ASUS (India), said, “Eee PC Seashell is yet another jewel in the crown of ASUS Eee PC family of netbooks. We want to make Eee PCs the premium brand in India. Eee PC Seashell Series is the new benchmark for Netbooks. The 3 new seashell Eee PC models are truly glamorous and offer real time computing pleasure”

Fate of future Asus touchscreen netbooks lies with Eee PC T91

July 20, 2009 at 11:35 am

Asus T101Asus recently launched the 8.9-inch Eee PC T91 convertible netbook in the US to mostly positive reviews. It is the company’s first touchscreen model and the first with a form factor that enables the netbook to be used as a tablet device too. It appears that the success of this particular model will impact the shape of future touchscreen models down the line according to a report from Digitimes.

Industry sources suggest that if the Eee PC T91 does not meet its sales expectations, then Asustek “may consider postponing the launch date of upcoming touchscreen netbooks, scale down their shipments, or even cancel them.” The only upcoming touch-based model we know of is the 10-inch Eee PC T101. The release date of the T101 has been pushed back to September, at the earliest, according to the report. This is two months later than originally anticipated.

We have heard the above before. Asus UK recently told us that the appearance of a multi-touch T91 and T101 would depend on the success of the T91. However, I’m inclined to believe that even if the model wasn’t a great success, Asus would still try and release another model based on Windows 7 and a multi-touch panel. After all, that would be an almost entirely different proposition to the model on the market today.

Asus Eee PC T91 now available to pre-order in UK

July 17, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Asus Eee PC T91Our friends across the pond are already lucky enough to be enjoying the Asus Eee PC T91 convertible netbook that released earlier this week. However, here in the UK we are still waiting for that vague “late July” timeframe before the T91 hits retailers.

Anyway, it may lessen the pain somewhat to know that the Eee PC T91 has now hit pre-order at Amazon.co.uk. The price is £449.00 as expected although it is listed as “Temporarily out of stock”. However, you can add it to your basket and hopefully it will ship within the next couple of weeks. We’ll bring you more once it hits UK retail for sure.

Asus Eee PC T91 Review Roundup

July 15, 2009 at 11:25 pm

Asus Eee PC T91The Asus Eee PC T91 convertible netbook officially went on sale in the US today. To mark the occasion, quite a few US publications posted their reviews today. In fact, we counted nine reviews altogether, so for those mulling the decision to lay down $499.99 on this 8.9-inch net tablet, there’s plenty of material to start your research.

The Eee PC T91 is one of the most anticipated netbooks to date. It is the first Asus touchscreen netbook and comes with a swivel mechanism so that it can be used as a tablet device. July 15, 2009 at 10:23 am

Asus Eee PC T91Right on cue, the Asus Eee PC T91 has now started to ship in the United States. Amazon.com has the Eee PC T91 listed for $499.99 and is in stock right now. ASUS North America said last week that stock is expected to be limited quantities, so if you are interested you’d better order quickly!

This is the standard version, so you won’t find 3G, TV Tuner or GPS in this model. Another model is due towards the autumn, which is expected to have a multi-touch screen and Windows 7.

The specifications listed seem exactly the same as the UK SKU (expected later this month). The convertible netbook comes with an 8.9-inch (1024 x 600) display powered by a 1.6GHz Z520 Atom processor and Poulsbo chipset. It also comes with 1GB RAM and a 16GB SSD (+20GB Eee storage). Asus Eee PC 1101HA Seashell netbook dissected

July 13, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Asus Eee PC 1101HA Seashell netbook dissectedTeardown netbook experts, Netbook Italia, are at it again. This time round, they have turned their attention to Asus’ first 11.6-inch Eee PC netbook, the 1101HA. They give a good guide on exactly what is under the ultrathin chassis and how Asus managed to pack it altogether.

They already stripped down the Eee PC 1008HA, but apart form the bigger display, the 1101HA differs by having access to the RAM memory module as well as having a removable battery.

To get to the motherboard, you need to remove eight batteries on the bottom and then lift out the keyboard. It looks like the motherboard is made up of three distinct PCBs. This technique is used to avoid having any conflict fitting the motherboard and 5400RPM hard disk drive. The insides don’t look as jam-packed as they did with the 1008HA, which should allow you to upgrade components comfortably. Check out a few pictures after the jump, but for the full guide head over to Netbook Italia. Read more

Official: Asus Eee PC T91 launches in US on 15th July

July 9, 2009 at 6:57 pm

Asus Eee PC T91 This morning everyone got a bit excited when it appeared that the Asus convertible netbook, the Eee PC T91, was in stock at an US online retailer. It seems that this listing was an error, as the status has since been moved from “In Stock” to “Pre-order”.

However, good news for Eee PC T91 fans, Asus US has officially confirmed that the 8.9-inch netbook will launch on Wednesday July 15th in the United States. However, stock will be in limited quantities so you’d better pre-order quickly if you want to be the first to get hands-on.
