HP Mini 311 reviewed – close to 6 hrs battery life

Following on from the HP Mini 311 benchmarks that appeared yesterday, Laptop Mag has released its review of the ION-powered netbook. Overall, it scored highly, earning a coveted ‘Editors Choice’ award. Whilst we’d already seen that performance was way ahead than your traditional netbook, we didn’t know how much of a hit this took on battery life.
Luckily, battery life wasn’t compromised. In their tests, they managed to get a very respectable 5 hours and 46 minutes out of the 6-cell battery. Combine this with a reasonable $399 price point, and sleek chassis, it seems that HP are onto a winner with the Mini 311. Check out the key review points after the break. Read more
HP’s ION-powered Mini 311 netbook benchmarked

The HP Mini 311 is one of the first ION-powered netbooks hitting the market (along with the Samsung N510 & Lenovo Ideapad S12). The inclusion of Nvidia’s ION circuitry should propel the netbooks performance way past than one with just Intel graphics. The difference will mostly be felt in 3D graphics, HD video content and flash (GPU-accelerated flash was officially announced yesterday by Adobe).
Laptop Mag has revealed its first set of benchmarks that it has for the HP Mini 311 and compares this against traditional netbooks along with some of the latest CULV-based ultra-thins. The Mini 311 scored 1,917 on the PCMark05 test, nearly 500 points better than the current netbook average. Read more
HP’s 11.6-inch Pavilion dm1 CULV ultra-thin leaked

HP is planning on launching the Pavilion dm1, an 11.6-inch CULV-powered ultra-thin according to a draft of HP’s Winter 2009/2010 consumer catalogue. It is expected to have a LED backlit display with resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. It will support up to 5GB of DDR3 RAM (including 2 DIMM slots) and up to 500GB of storage space.
Despite the larger chassis, you’ll only get a 92-percent sized keyboard and battery life should be good for 9 hours. Other features include webcam, 5-in-1 card reader and three USB ports. HP Mini 311 ION-powered netbook gets official

No surprises on this announcement since most details have been leaked over the last few weeks, but this morning HP has announced an 11.6-inch netbook using the ION platform. The HP Mini 311 sports a high resolution (1366 x 768) display and is powered by a 1.6GHz N270 Atom CPU. It also has 1GB RAM and a 160GB HDD.
The press release confirms that it will come with Nvidia ION LE (entry level) and runs on Windows XP. I’m surprised that HP didn’t choose to go for a full-sized keyboard, you get a 92-percent sized keyboard that is standard on most 10-inch netbooks. Other features include three USB ports, a couple of audio jacks and a 5-in-1 card reader.
The Mini 311 will hit the US on September 23rd for $399. Another SKU with Windows 7 will launch on October 22nd. Laptop Mag has a hands-on video that is worth checking out. HP launches new Vivienne Tam “Butterfly Lovers” netbook

Fashion never stands still and therefore it’s no surprise to see HP announcing a new netbook in conjunction with fashion designer, Vivienne Tam. This new netbook has a design inspired by “Butterfly Lovers”, a classic Chinese love story. It features big butterflies against a champagne background. It replaces the previous Vivienne Tam netbook that had a red floral design.
The HP Vivienne Tam digital clutch (as it is called) will be available in Spring 2010. There’s no word on hardware or pricing right now.
“To me, butterflies symbolize love, freedom, independence and transformation,” said Vivienne Tam. “I love working with HP because they are also inspired by nature. Together we bring life, color and personality to the computer world, creating fashionable technology for modern women.”
“The new digital clutch design embodies the inspiration for my entire spring collection,” said Tam. “When women around the globe carry HP’s digital clutch and wear my clothes, I want them to feel independent and free, like butterflies.”

The HP Mini 311 (Compaq Mini 311c in Europe) is expected to hit the market with an 11.6-inch (1366 x 768) display and ION LE platform. Whilst the model hasn’t been officially announced, it is believed to be powered by a 1.6GHz N270 Atom processor, 1GB RAM and a 160GB HDD.
Other features include Wi-Fi (B/g), Bluetooth, HDMI out, three USB ports, webcam and 5-in-1 card reader. It will come with a 92 percent keyboard and a 6-cell battery. Notebook Italia stumbled on some official press images of the Mini 311 that show it will come in two colours, black and white, both with patterned lids. Lenovo’s Ideapad S12 ION to launch after Windows 7 release

The Lenovo Ideapad S12 ION netbook was one of the first netbooks to be announced with Nvidia’s ION wizardry. However, since its announcement back in May, we’ve not heard too much about the ION version (the Atom and VIA SKUs are already out). Indeed, the Samsung N510 has stolen much of the ION momentum away from the S12 ION.
Gizmodo now has word that the S12 ION will not ship until Windows 7 has launched i.e. it will launch after October 22nd. This means it will be able to use the newer OS that should deliver better performance than the Vista version it was planning to ship with. No firm date was given, but it is expected to retail for $550, around $50 more expensive than the standard Atom SKU.
They were also told that a HP ION netbook is also due in the coming weeks. Looks like everyone wants to jump on the ION bandwagon.
Active Media release SSD upgrades for HP Mini netbooks

We recently saw Active Media launch a Solid State upgrade line for Asus Eee PC netbooks. The company has now followed this up with a Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) line-up for HP Mini netbooks. These PATA SSD flash drives come in 1.8-inch size only and are designed to be easy to install.
Active Media claim that these drives will fit a number of HP netbooks including the HP Mini 1000, 1010NR, 1030NR and 2510P. These drives are quite reasonably priced, a 16GB unit will cost $70 and the $32GB costs $110. However, this reflects speeds that aren’t the best in class. It has sequential reads and writes up to 82MBps and 38MBps, respectively. It is also unknown whether these will fit the recently announced Mini 110 series.
HP & MSI planning Pineview-powered tablet netbooks for H1 2010?

Both Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Micro-Star International (MSI) are planning to launch convertible netbooks during the first half of 2010, according to Digitimes. MSI will be launching a 10-inch tablet netbook at the start of 2010, whilst HP plans a similar release for April/May 2010 manufactured by OEM Inventec.
The report says that both convertible netbooks will use Intel’s next-gen Pineview N450 Atom processor. It’s therefore very likely that they will be powered by Windows 7, taking advantage of the operating system’s touch features. It also says that Asus will be launching its 10-inch Eee PC T101 tablet netbook with Windows 7. The report goes on to say that Apple may be launching its tablet device as early as November 2009.

HP Mini 5101 video hands-on

We have not seen too many videos of HP’s business-targeted Mini 5101, so we thought we’d share a video tour demoed by James over at JKOnTheRun. So far, he is impressed with the solid build quality, thanks to its metal casing. He is also fond of the 95-percent chiclet keyboard.
His video tour shows off the hardware itself, including ports and connectors. It also gives an idea how little the 6-cell battery adds to the bulk of the netbook. The netbook is also one of the few that has a 2.0MP webcam. Battery life is claimed to be around the 6 hours mark, which is certainly respectable. Check out the video after the break. Read more
HP Compaq Mini 110c tested

The HP Compaq Mini 110c is the European equivalent of the HP Mini 110 netbook released in the US. The Compaq 110c is almost exactly the same as the Mini 110, it mainly differs in having a high-gloss ‘infinity’ imprint finish, which compares to the swirl design of the Mini 110.
TrustedReviews has reviewed the Mini 110c and found that it is a competent netbook with a great keyboard and offers good value for money. However, they felt other similarly priced netbooks offer battery life. Overall it scored 7/10. Check out the key review points after the jump. Read more
HP to launch new 10.1-inch and 11.6-inch netbooks for H209?

HP may be working on a couple of new netbook models to be released in the second half of the year according to Digitimes. A number of manufacturers have recently released larger sized netbook models, with display sizes of 11.6 or 12.1-inches. HP may be following suit, the report suggests that original design manufacturer, Quanta Computer, will start production of a new 11.6-inch device from August.
Quanta will also have a new 10.1-inch netbook model in production for Hewlett-Packard by the year-end too. This will be in addition to a revised 10.1-inch netbook to begin production by Inventec from the end of September.
There are no details on any of these netbooks, although looking at the timeline, a sensible guess suggests they will come with the Windows 7 operating system. They may even end up launching with the next-generation Atom ‘Pineview’ processor. The 11.6-inch model may also end up being a CULV-based ultra-thin device. As soon as we have clarification we’ll let you know.
HP Mini 5101 gets HD display & 6-cell battery upgrade options

The business-targeted HP Mini 5101 netbook became available in the US last week. However at the time only the Windows XP model was available, it now appears that a SUSE Linux option is also available along with upgrade options for a high-resolution (1366 x 768) display and 6-cell battery.
Both 6-cell battery and HD display options cost a reasonable $25 each to upgrade. Other upgrade options include 2GB RAM for $25 (not included for the XP Home SKU), 3G modem for $125 and a variety of HDD and SDD storage options. A Draft-N Wi-Fi module is also available for $20. These customisation options are available right now.

The HP Mini 5101 netbook is marketed to business users and is the successor to the well-received HP Mini 2140 that will be discontinued in the next few months. It features a magnesium alloy chassis, a fast 7200RPM hard-disk drive, a 95 percent chiclet keyboard with HP DuraKey finish and a protective HDD system called HP 3D DriveGuard.
A couple of sites (Laptop Mag and PC Mag) have published reviews of the HP Mini 5101 netbook. Both sites praised the Mini 5101 for its solid and attractive design (important if you’re on the road a lot) as well as its performance. Business-targeted HP Mini 5101 netbook now available

The HP Mini 5101 netbook is now on sale in the US from $399. The Mini 5101 is marketed to the business segment and features a magnesium alloy chassis, a fast 7200RPM hard-disk drive, a 95 percent chiclet keyboard with HP DuraKey finish and a protective HDD system called HP 3D DriveGuard.
The Mini 5101 comes with a 10.1-inch (1024 x 600) display powered by a 1.66GHz N280 Atom CPU and 1GB RAM. Various HDD and SDD storage options are offered along with a choice of Windows XP Home, XP Pro, Vista Home Basic, Vista Business, or SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 operating systems.
The listed model comes with XP Home, a 4-cell battery (good for 4.5 hours of use), Wi-Fi (Draft-N) and Bluetooth 2.0. You’ll also get three USB ports, a 2MP webcam and card reader. The 6-cell battery and high-resolution (1366 x 768) options do not appear to be available right now.
