Asus Eee PC 1201T: AMD Congo powered 12.1” netbook
November 29, 2009 at 11:49 am
Details of the Asus Eee PC 1201T have emerged. We already knew of such a model number, when the manual for the 1201HA and ION-powered 1201N made an appearance. However, we didn’t know what kind of specifications it would sport. All we knew was that it lacked the HDMI port seen on the 1201N and had only two USB ports.
The Asus Eee PC 1201T was launched at a Chinese press event yesterday, lifting the lid on the 1201T spec-sheet. We now know that it will be powered by the 1.6GHz dual-core AMD Congo MV40 processor. It will come with 2GB DDR2 RAM and a 250GB HDD. Read more

ASUS Eee PC 1005HR & Samsung N140 video unboxings
November 22, 2009 at 2:32 pm
The Asus Eee PC 1005HR netbook is pretty much identical to the 1005HA Seashell apart from one key fact, it has a high-resolution 1366 x 768 pixel 10.1-inch display. This compares to the 1024 x 600 resolution found on the 1005HA display. It’s only available in Japan right now and Peter from Netbooked has shot an unboxing video.
He also unboxed the Samsung N140 netbook and liked the keyboard, matte display and lightweight chassis. The N140 is similar to the N130, but has a higher capacity battery and stereo speakers. You can check out both videos after the jump. Read more
Asus Eee PC 1201N gets UK launch details
November 20, 2009 at 9:52 am
Asus UK has officially confirmed that the dual-core ION-powered Eee PC 1201N netbook will be coming to the UK. It will be priced at £399 (including VAT) and is set to launch “around mid January”.
This seems like an aggressive price point to us, especially considering the fact that one of the other ION-powered netbooks on the market, the 11.6-inch Samsung N510, has the same RRP but only comes with XP and a single-core 1.66GHz N280 Atom processor.
The Eee PC 1201N will come with a dual-core 1.6GHz Atom 330, 12.1-inch display and Windows 7 Home Premium. The specifications are as revealed yesterday, although we’ve listed them again after the break. Read more

Netbook failure rate 20 percent higher than laptops
November 17, 2009 at 12:24 pm
SquareTrade, a large independent warranty provider, has analysed the failure rates for over 30,000 laptops and netbooks covered by its warranty plans with some revealing insights. It found that just under a third of laptops will fail within three years and that netbooks are 20 percent more likely to fail.
Breaking down the results, SquareTrade found that 20.4 percent of laptop failures were due to hardware malfunctions and 10.4 percent were from accidental damage. Whilst one would expect netbooks to suffer a higher rate of accidental damage to their portability, apparently netbook hardware malfunctions were 20 percent higher than laptops. Read more
Asus Eee PC 1201N hits US pre-order
November 12, 2009 at 10:55 pm
Surely there must be some official news on the dual-core ION-powered Asus Eee PC 1201N soon. Just last week it appeared for pre-order in Italy and now it has hit pre-order in the US. Excaliber PC has the 12.1-inch netbook listed for $499 including free shipping. The model listed (1201N-PU17-BK) confirms what we’ve previously heard.
It has a dual-core 1.6GHz Atom 330 processor, ION graphics, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD & Windows 7 Home Premium. Other features include a 0.3MP webcam, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi (b/g/n), HDMI and a 6-cell battery.
This certainly looks like the netbook that many have longed for, the only thing that may work against it is battery life. Asus UK said an official announcement on the 1201N was expected this week, but we’ve not heard anything so far.
Thanks Bob!
Impressions of the Asus Eee PC T91MT convertible netbook surface [Video]
November 10, 2009 at 2:43 pm
The Asus Eee PC T91MT only started to ship in the last few days, however one user has already received his unit and posted his initial impressions. Kubel from MyT91 found that the 32GB SSD performed similarly to the 16GB SSD in the original T91, albeit it was a little slower. Windows 7 was also quite snappy in terms of performance.
Other features were similar to the original T91 and include a well designed 8.9-inch form-factor, a bright display that sits between matte & display and is a fingerprint magnet. It also comes with a firm hinge that is critical for a device that will be switched between tablet & netbook mode often. He hasn’t tested the multi-touch features extensively, but we can see some of those from an official Asus promo video attached after the break. Read more

November 9, 2009 at 2:30 pm
That was quick, the Asus Eee PC T91MT (‘multi-touch’) convertible netbook only appeared on US pre-order at the beginning of the month and it is now shipping. The white model (T91MT-PU17-WT) is currently in stock at Amazon.com for $532 including delivery, I couldn’t find any sign of the black model.
The specifications of the 8.9-inch T91MT are similar to the T91, coming with a 1.33GHz Z520 Atom processor, 1GB RAM and an upgraded 32GB SSD. It also comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, which fully supports multi-touch features. Battery life should be good for 5 hours. Read more

Asus smartbook pushed back to Q2 2010?
November 5, 2009 at 2:49 pm
It was only last week that Asus were talking about launching a smartbook device to hit shelves in the first quarter of next year. However, the Asus smartbook will now be delayed until the second quarter of 2010 according to Judy Wu, Asus market specialist.
No reasons were given for the delay and there is no confirmation whether we’ll even see the device hit UK shores. Asus says that the biggest market for these smartbook devices are in the emerging markets and Asia-Pacific region.
Wu’s definition of a smartbook is a device that has a 5-7-inch screen, although she wouldn’t define what processor would be included. The choice of operating system is still undecided, Wu says that “Android is an option”, although it will depend on product schedules as to which is used.

Asus’ dual-core ION Eee PC 1201N netbook hits Italian pre-order
November 4, 2009 at 3:43 pm
It looks like the monstrous Asus Eee PC 1201N netbook, armed with a dual-core CPU and ION chipset, may be hitting European retail pretty soon. The 12.1-inch netbook has just appeared on pre-order from an Italian retailer for €510. No release date was given but the specifications listed match what we’ve already heard.
The listing suggests the model will come with a 1.6GHz dual-core Atom 330 processor, 3GB RAM and a 320GB HDD. The display size is listed as 11.6-inches although we suspect this must be a typo, as the 1201 series is reported to come with a 12.1-inch (1366 x 768) display. Other features include Windows 7 Home Premium, 0.3MP webcam, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi (b/g/n), HDMI and a 6-cell battery.

Asus is set to launch a budget netbook in its Seashell range called the Eee PC 1001HA. The 1001HA has hit pre-order at Amazon UK for £199.99 and as you’d expect for that bargain price you get a very basic feature set.
The 1001HA has a 10.1-inch (1024 x 600) display, 1.6GHz N270 Atom processor, 1GB RAM and 160GB HDD. It only comes with a 3-cell battery and features Windows XP rather than Windows 7. It also appears to have a textured lid.
Other features include Wi-Fi (b/g/n), 0.3MP webcam and three USB ports. No Bluetooth on this model. The 1001HA is available in black & white and is expected to ship “within 1 to 3 months” according to Amazon. Check out some pictures of the 1001HA after the break. Read more

Asus planning $185 Snapdragon smartbook for Q1 2010 launch
October 30, 2009 at 10:36 am
This is why you should never trust what a Chief Executive says. Asustek CEO, Jerry Shen, has apparently told an investor conference yesterday that it will be launching a smartbook device in the first quarter 2010. He even referred to smartbooks with such colorful language as a “secret weapon” that could take the company to a new “Eee PC-like peak”
However, it was only in late August when Shen had reportedly frozen development of smartbooks. “Currently, I still don’t see a clear market for smartbooks,” Shen said at the time. Obviously something has changed his mind in the intervening two months, looking at the contrast in sentiment.
Little detail is known about the Asus smartbook, although Shen said that pricing will be around the NTD 6,000 ($185, €125, £110) mark, before tax. It will also apparently be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon (ARM-designed) processor. We’re still waiting for the hoard of smartbooks to launch this quarter, however despite this, it would take a foolish person to write off this interesting new category of device.
