JooJoo Tablet to start shipping on March 25

Fusion Garage’s JooJoo 12.1-inch capacitive tablet has seen a delay and is now expected to ship to consumers on March 25 2010. The delay is due to a “manufacturing issue” that the company become aware of recently. This issue relates to fine tuning the sensitivity of the touchscreen. To appease all of those who pre-ordered the JooJoo a few accessory, without stating what that is.

HP Slate to undercut Apple iPad on price; MS working on Courier

Hewlett Packard has released little detail on its Slate tablet device. Apparently this is for good reason. According to the WSJ, HP was waiting to see what Apple had in store with the iPad, before tweaking features and price-points. Its sources suggest that HP executives will be meeting in the US and Taiwan over the next few weeks to discuss these exact issues.

It sounds like 3G will be one of the Slate’s features as the company is considering selling a version of the Slate that has a similar display size and features as the iPad (including a 3G connection) for a price less than Apple is charging ($629). Read more

OpenPeak intros 7-inch Moorestown-powered OpenTablet 7

Anyone getting sick of the number of tablets hitting the scene? No? Good, us neither. This time round we have OpenPeak who have debuted their OpenTablet 7 at MWC in Barcelona. This is a 7-inch multitouch tablet that is powered by Intel’s Moorestown platform.

It features dual cameras for HD video recording, HDMI port, USB and a microSD card. It will also support Wi-Fi (b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1 and 3G. The latter of which can enable the OpenTablet7 to be used as a phone as it has both a mic and speakers. Read more

Notion Ink Adam tablet specs revealed; sports new design [Video hands-on]

Hard details of Notion Ink’s 10.1-inch Adam tablet have been few and far between. That has now changed with the company unveiling the specifications over on it its official site. We can now confirm that there will indeed be two SKUs, one including the Pixel-Qi display and one without. It will also come with a HDMI out, a rotating 3.2MP webcam, a 10.1-inch (1024 x 600) capacitive multitouch display and a 3-cell battery that should be good for 16 hours in full colour mode.

The design has also changed since our last look of the device at CES 2010 earlier in the year. The guys over at Technoholik managed to spend some time with the Adam and we’ve included their hands-on video after the jump. Slashgear also has had a pre-MWC play around and shot a video demonstrating Adobe Flash and its rotating webcam. Pricing is still a mystery, but hopefully more details will emerge at MWC that officially starts today. Read more

Asus to reveal “killer product” in June

Asus Chairman Jonney Shih has said that the company is prepping a “killer product” for launch in June, probably during the Computex show in Taiwan. Whilst he didn’t give any further hints, the most likely reference is to its tablet device (dubbed Eee Pad) that is will sport the Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset.

The Eee Pad was first spotted at CES 2010, although no specs were detailed. It was simply referred to as the “Asus Tablet Concept” along with a placeholder saying that it is powered by a Nvidia Tegra chip. The news came as Asus announced it will be spinning off its Pegatron manufacturing arm. The device is said to be manufactured by Pegatron and be launched at a sub-$500 price point. If true, Apple iPad may have some stiff competition in the second half of this year.

Notion Ink Adam tablet renders surface, two versions considered

Of the many tablets shown off at CES 2010 in January, the Notion Ink Adam was one of the most interesting. It utilizes two of the most exciting technologies in the mobile computing space, the Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset as well as Pixel Qi’s 3Qi Hybrid 10-inch display. Whilst the device shown at CES was very much a prototype, Slashgear has managed to get their hands-on with renders of what the finished tablet will look like.

Interestingly, the company is considering two models, one that is 12.9mm thick and the other is 11.6mm in thickness (for reference the iPad is 13.4mm thick). Notion Ink hasn’t said what the differences are, but one version may end up excluding the Pixel Qi display that no doubt adds bulk and instead going for a vanilla LCD display on the slimmer model. Apple iPad interest waning?

It was somewhat unusual that Apple launched a product without it being almost immediately available. When Apple launched the iPad tablet at the end of January, it did so knowing that it won’t be in consumers hands for another couple of months. One of the dangers of this is that people will stop caring, well at least until Apple’s marketing juggernaut is unleashed.

A survey by Retrevo has shown that Apple has not convinced people to buy the new Apple iPad as well as losing some potential customers following its official announcement. They conducted two surveys, one before and one after the announcement with 1,000 people. Unfortunately, the number of people saying that they weren’t interested in buying the tablet doubled from 26 percent before the announcement to 52 percent afterwards. Read more

X2 intros iTablet, comes in two display sizes

Hot on the heels from Apple’s iPad launch, UK company X2 has introduced a new tablet. They’ve named it the iTablet (one of the rumoured names for the iPad), but takes one step ahead of the iPad by adding Flash, Windows/Linux versions, as well as a plethora of ports including HDMI and USB.

It will come in two display sizes, 10.2-inch and 12.1-inch (1024 x 768) displays with optional multi-touch. Not sure why they didn’t make it multi-touch out of the box, especially for a tablet that size. It will be powered by a 1.6GHz CPU (Atom?) and support up to 250GB of storage. Other features include built-in speakers, a 1.3MP webcam, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and optional 3G. Read more

JooJoo Tablet gears up to full production; app store on horizon

All of the fuss may still be over the Apple iPad, however let’s not forget Fusion Garage’s JooJoo tablet that offers a larger 12.1-inch display and flash support for the same price as the iPad ($499). The company has confirmed that production of the tablet has “moved into full production” with shipments expected to hit consumers by the end of February.

It has teamed up with Malaysia’s largest OEM, CSL who will absorb the upfront manufacturing costs in exchange for a royalty on each JooJoo sold. CSL has also made a strategic investment in Fusion Garage. The company’s founder, Chandrasekar “Chandra” Rathakrishnan, has also said that a full app store is in the works. “We have a bigger ‘app store’ than Apple because we have the full Internet,” Chandra said. The company is certainly ambitious, not that I really understand why seemingly every manufacturer wants their own app store these days…

ExoPC Slate: 8.9-inch tablet with Windows 7, 32GB SSD for $599

ExoPC will soon launch its 8.9-inch ExoPC Slate tablet that will be powered by a 1.6GHz N270 Atom processor (no Pineview love here), 2GB RAM, a 32GB SSD and Windows 7.

The 8.9-inch (1024 x 600) display will support multi-touch input and have a four hour battery life. Other features include three USB ports, a 1.3MP webcam, Wi-Fi (b/g), Bluetooth, VGA and Ethernet.

The ExoPC Slate will launch in March for $599, the same price as the 32GB Apple iPad. It’s not as thin as the iPad at 2.1cm in thickness but at least appears to more fully featured.

Apple iPad compared against 5 other upcoming slates

If CES wasn’t an indication enough that 2010 is likely to be the year of the tablet (or slate if you prefer), then Gizmodo has a nice comparison table where it has compared six slates (including the recently announced Apple iPad).

Having a quick run through the list, the Notion Ink stands out for me. It’s the only one to come with a Pixel Qi display for e-reading duties and sports Android, Tegra 2 and even a HDMI out. The only glaring omission is Adobe Flash support, but I’m sure Android will support this at some point down the line. Check out the detailed comparison table after the break. Read more

MSI prepping 10-inch Tegra/Android tablet for $500 later this year

MSI is planning on launching its 10-inch Tegra tablet, first shown off at CES, later this year for $500 according to Digitimes. It should be armed with Tegra’s Cortex A9 chipset and Android operating system.

This will pit it against the Apple iPad, with a similar price point, display and computing power. However the MSI tablet should benefit from multitasking and it is reported to be “thin and light.” Tegra should also be able to handle 1080p video as opposed to 720p for the Apple iPad. There are still question marks over a full spec-list but we’ll keep you posted.

Harlequin dual-screen ‘Courier’ tablet created from Dell Mini 9

Now this is a mod we’ve not come across before. MyDellMini member pakkei decided to embark on the Harlequin project, which was to create something similar to the Microsoft Courier. For those that don’t know, the fabled Microsoft Courier has dual-screen multi-touch panels and is designed for writing, flicking and drawing with a stylus, in addition to fingers.

The Harlequin is pakkei’s take on the project, where he has modded his Dell Mini 9 netbook to form a slate and then added another 9-inch USB touchscreen. The left panel will be used for reading content and the right panel will be used for taking notes. The orientation of the displays can also be reversed to be used in a more normal netbook form-factor too.

As the device uses Windows 7 it features both handwriting and voice recognition. The Harlequin is mostly working although it does need a dual-hinged chassis. Seems like some good handy work from pakkei.

Dell Mini 9 slate tablet mod now gets accelerometer

We previously reported on a mod that enabled you to convert your Dell Mini 9 netbook into a slate tablet. For those of you that actually went through the effort then you’ll be glad to hear that another mod exists that puts accelerometer functionality into the tablet.

Rumour: Apple Revealing Details of 10-inch Tablet Today

Computerworld is predicting that Apple will be announcing a 10-inch tablet device at its Apple 3.0 event later today. Apple advertised late last year for someone to work with Apple’s expanded role in embedded devices. Combine this with recent rumours that Apple is buying 10-inch touchscreen panels leads to a possible Apple Tablet in the works.

Personally, I would see a convertible tablet make more sense than just a standalone tablet. That size would be hard to use with the light-touch screen of the iPhone for example, every time you brush it something will happen that you don’t want. Anyway, Apple may feel it is too early to reveal its hand. If anything does come out of today’s event we’ll keep you posted. The event is scheduled to start at 5PM GMT this afternoon.
